Genevieve Balsdon, 86, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla.
Genevieve Mary McGauvran was born June 8, 1932, in Langdon, ND, to Charles and Maude (Symons) McGauvran. She grew up on a farm near Easby and graduated from Osnabrock High School in 1952. She then went to Mayville Teacher’s College where she earned her teaching certificate. She returned to the area and taught all twelve grades in a one-room school house near Senator Young Dam for a couple years. On October 3, 1953, Gen and John “Jack” Balsdon were married at Church of the Advent in Devils Lake, ND. They raised their family in Osnabrock then moved to Langdon in 1980.
Gen loved animals and was an excellent cook, especially doughnuts. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She was a hard worker and was always willing to help others. Gen was a happy-go-lucky person, and you couldn’t leave her without getting a hug. In her younger years, she was a proud member of St. James Episcopalian Church Women’s Group.
Surviving Genevieve are her children: Monica (Dale) Schwartz of Langdon, Michael (Darlene) of Milton, ND, Mark (Gina) of Manvel, ND, and Matthew (Christal) of Langdon; grandchildren: Kelly Schwartz, Dexter (Tia) Schwartz, Daniel (Shawna) Balsdon, Michaela (Michael) Smyth, Joshua Balsdon, Logan Longtin, Rebecca Balsdon, Robert (Casey) Balsdon, and Rachel Balsdon; great-grandchildren: Darwin, Courtney, Ally, Braxlee, Jake, Hendrix, and Amy; and brother Bill (Lottie) McGauvran of Langdon. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, brother John, and sister Martha.
A service for Genevieve will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2019, at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon, ND, with visitation starting one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in the spring at Zion Cemetery, rural Osnabrock, ND.
