July 19, 1937 - January 6, 2025
In the early morning hours of January 6, 2025, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Abram (Abe) Giesbrecht, age 87, passed away peacefully at his residence.
Abe was born in Winkler on July 19, 1937 to Abram and Katharina Giesbrecht. He was the second youngest of nine children and the youngest boy in the family. His younger years were spent going to school and helping on the farm. Times were tough growing up, and when Abe’s mother passed away during his teens, there was less time for school because his help was needed at home. He often expressed regret at not being able to continue in school, particularly when it came to studying music.
Worshiping God through music was an important part of Abe’s life. He organized and led the choir at the Winkler EMMC, sang in different quartets, and performed at various church functions throughout the years. In 2007, Abe received recognition for 50 years of service through music from the EMMC in Winkler. At home, he spent many hours at the piano, singing and learning the different parts to many pieces of music.
In 1957, Abe was baptized upon confession of his faith at the Rudnerweide Church (now EMMC). Two years later, on July 19, 1959, he married the love of his life, Tina Driedger. They were blessed with four children, Susanne, Len, Ron, and Ray. In 1961, Abe and Tina bought a farm in Greenfarm where they lived and farmed until retiring to Winkler in 2005. Abe’s love of farming continued throughout his life, and in 2023, at the age of 86, he was still able to help son, Ray, with the majority of the combining during the harvest season.
Greater than Abe’s love of music and farming was his faith in God. This faith was evident in his day-to-day life, in his many conversations with others, and especially after the passing of Tina in 2010.
Abe is survived by his daughter, Susanne, Darwin (Liss), Oasis, Jacqui (Sheldon), Creston, Evvi; son, Len (Marge), Kara (Brad), Jacob, Jaden (Natasha), Dalya, Aurelia; son, Ron (Colleen), Kayla, Braeden (Emily), Jessica (Javier); son, Ray (Colleen), Vivian. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Tina, son-in-law, Al Wiebe, four sisters, and three brothers.
As a family, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Samaritan Wellness team for the excellent home care they provided to “Mr. Abe” during his final months. We would also like to thank Karen Schaak and Dr. Tanja Borchers for the home visits and assistance they provided.
