Abram H Suderman was born on June 5, 1924 in Greenfarm Manitoba to Abram D Suderman and Elizabeth Hildebrand. The “H” for Dad’s initial came from his mom’s maiden name.
On May 21, 1945 Abe was baptized in The Bergthaler Mennonite Church of Manitoba in Winkler.
Until his early adulthood, Abe worked on the farm in Greenfarm with his family. But not having farming in his blood, Abe set off to try his hand at an assortment of jobs until he tried his hand in construction. He worked as a “Jack of all trades” until he settled into building cement block basements. He built many basements here in the town, and one of his tools, the concrete mixer, is still in use today.
Abe met Elsie at a hockey game in December of 1954 and were married the following September of 1955. Cement block construction was hard work and maybe at that time not reliable, and with a family on the way, he needed steady wages. Abe got a job at the Winkler Post Office and he worked there for 30 plus years, finally retiring as Post Master.
Abe & Elsie’s family was blessed with 1 son and 2 daughters. Family members were added and now they have 2 son in laws, 1 daughter in law, 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Dad was always involved in the community. In 1956, he joined the Winkler Volunteer Fire Department and it became a big part of his life, like a second family. As you can see by their presence here
today, Dad was an important member of the Department. While he was Fire Chief, dad had the privilege of serving with his son and a son in law. He retired from the Fire Department in 1998.
While working full time and volunteering at the Fire Department, he still found time to: play in the Winkler Band, he taught trumpet lessons, he was the neighbourhood barber, he was on Town Planning Committees, he was involved in Church Committees, and I probably have missed some of the other committees he was involved in.
Dad worked tirelessly for the Winkler Heritage Society and Museum in establishing the Bethel Heritage Park which is home to Commemorative Monuments of the pioneers that settled Winkler. In 1982, Dad was honoured the “Citizen of the Year” award.
