January 28, 1944 - January 11, 2026
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Alfonso Guevara, age 81, of Winkler, Manitoba, announces that he passed on to his Heavenly home on January 11 at Boyne Lodge in Carman.
He is survived by his wife Anita, 2 sons, Luis, Victor (Lili), and 3 daughters, Grace (Rick), Brenda (Juan Carlos), Vilma (Eric), sister Francisca, 13 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and relatives.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Santos, brother Marcial, sister Mercedes, sister Corinna, sister Felicita, and brother Jose.
Alfonso was born on January 28, 1944 in El Salvador. He spent over half of his life growing up and living in El Salvador. In the 1980’s he made the decision, as many others did, to move his family to the United States to escape the difficulties and danger of the ongoing civil war. Over the next several years, Alfonso and Anita worked hard to save money to slowly move their children out of the country. They lived in Dallas for several years until he learned of an opportunity to move his family to Canada, and made the decision to do that. In 1988 they made the move to Winkler, sponsored by a local church. A couple of families were instrumental in helping them get settled, and are still an important part of the family’s lives.
He worked many different occupations throughout his life. He fondly remembered milking cows on the ranch in El Salvador. He worked in agriculture, as an autobody repairman, did cleaning and many other various jobs. He worked hard, and spent his last working years at Monarch in Winkler. Coworkers and others that he met often became friends.
He had many different interests and talents. He had a love of singing and at one point was a member of a Mariachi band. He loved sharing his singing talent with others, singing wherever he was, hauling his Karaoke machine to events and making recordings of his music. He was artistic and creative, always making things with his hands like clay models, ox carts, airplanes, stools, benches and drawings and much more. He loved being outdoors, feeding his birds, working in the garden, fishing with his family (except when he wasn’t catching anything). He took great pride and enjoyment from his yard in El Salvador, and loved to show people his trees and plants, and wanted so badly to visit one more time.
Over the last number of years he experienced a number of serious health setbacks. The loss of his sight and symptoms of dementia were very difficult for him and for his family. These health issues eventually led to him being admitted to Eastview Place in Altona in March 2024, followed by a move to Boyne Lodge in Carman in December 2024.
The family would like to thank the staff at Eastview Place and Boyne Lodge for their care and attention.
