Anna Giesbrecht (nee Peters)
1950 ~ 2024
Anna was born to Cornelius and Susana Peters (nee Heide) in Schoendarp, Mexico, on May 25, 1950. Their family moved to Reinland, Canada in April of 1967. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith on May 26, 1969 at the Old Colony Mennonite Church in Reinfeld by Bishop Jacob Penner. She married Ben Giesbrecht on August 5, 1973 at the Old Colony Mennonite Church in Chortitz. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary just this last summer. They shared 50 years, 7 months and 8 days. Together they raised five daughters in Hamburg. In 2004 they moved into Plum Coulee, before making Winkler their home in 2019.
Anna endured many surgeries; eye surgery in the early 70’s, open heart surgery for mitral valve replacement, a thymoma removed from her lung, knee replacement for both knees and one hip replacement, a pacemaker put in and most recently, on December 14, a mastectomy. She developed a large blood clot on December 24 and was sent to Grace Hospital where she received several surgeries due to complications. She was able to be transferred to Boundary Trails on February 9, 2024 where she stayed until her passing. Anna passed away on Wednesday, March 13 at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 17 days.
She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, two sisters-in-law and a brother and sister in infancy, . She leaves to mourn her passing her loving husband Ben; daughter Susanne and husband John Krahn with their daughters Jada and Robyn; daughter Agatha and husband Peter Wall with children Abby (husband Eric Olfert and daughters Millie and Rosie), Alex, Caitlin and Spencer; daughter Anna and husband Henry Krahn with their twin sons Dawson and Evan; daughter Jodi and husband Patrick Epler; daughter Evlyn and husband Abe Hamm with their daughters Tyra, Paisley, Mia, Leightyn, Bailey and baby due April 30.
Anna was a true believer in Jesus Christ and her aim was always to live for Him, and to see her children and grandchildren come to saving grace as well. One of her favorite songs (Together in Heaven) describes her desire for her family. The strength of her faith was very evident in how she endured her health struggles with grace and little to no complaining. It was common to hear her reassure us all that God makes no mistakes, and she was always accepting of His will. The hospital staff, and anyone that came to see her, always mentioned her smile and how happy she was.
As her daughters, we have many special memories of our mom, and it’s hard to share just a few. She loved us fiercely. It always gave her great joy to be able to cook or sew anything for us. Playing games brought out her competitive side! She liked to win, but spending time with her family was the real prize. Another memory that makes us smile, is when we would ask her to share a recipe of hers, and it often did not turn out the way she made it. We were convinced that she left out a few “secret” ingredients just to make sure that hers was always just a little bit better. Mom, of course, denied this emphatically, and that was okay, because we were more than happy to give her the credit!
We also know how very much each of her sons-in-law meant to her. We believe with every wedding, she could rest a little easier knowing her daughters were going to be loved and cared for. Her boys were always ready to help with anything mom needed as well. It was easy to do everything possible just to make her happy!
A wish that mom had, was to have another family gathering, which God granted this past Christmas. Mom was doing well and was able to enjoy our time together as well as the food. Something she hadn’t been able to do for a while. This is something we will always be grateful for. God has been so good to us!
Our grief seems almost unbearable right now, but we know our great and loving God will see us through!
We would like to extend our appreciation to the wonderful, caring staff at Grace Hospital and Boundary Trails Health Centre. To family and friends for prayer support, food, flowers and visits. To Bishop Peter Elias, Rev. Victor Peters, Rev. Herman Bueckert, song leaders, ushers, pallbearers, caretakers and serving ladies. Also to Wiebe Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
If we have forgotten to mention anyone we want you to know that it was not intentional and we are very grateful for your support. Words cannot express how greatly we appreciate Dad’s loving care for Mom. He modeled the dedication and commitment to their marriage vows, in sickness and in health, that we will strive to emulate. But most of all we are grateful to God for carrying us through this difficult time.
