(nee Enns)
March 18, 1926 - June 25, 2025
Annie Derksen passed away suddenly on June 25th at Salem Home in Winkler.
She was born on March 18, 1926, to Jacob W. and Justina Enns of Hamburg, Manitoba. Sisters Dorothy and Eleanor later joined the family. There were enough children in the small community to enjoy baseball games, which Annie loved.
In 1944, Annie began dating Jake Derksen, who had also attended the Hamburg school. Before their marriage, she worked at the Harder & Jackman Store in Plum Coulee. Jake and Annie were married on a very wet, muddy day—September 22, 1946—at the Plum Coulee Bergthaler Church. They began their married life living in Annie’s parents’ home. In March 1950, their son Brian was born, and just a few months later, the family moved to Kane, where Jake began farming. Their second son, Reg, was born in 1952. From 1946 to 1956, the family spent their winters in Winnipeg, where Jake could find work.
In 1961, they moved their house from Kane to a new yard in the Hamburg district, where Jake continued to farm. Later, they built a new home across the bridge when their sons began to have families of their own. They retired to Poplar Bay in Winkler in 1993 and eventually moved to Crocus Village. Jake passed away on February 22, 2017, after spending a couple of years at Salem Home.
Annie faithfully supported Jake through his years as a trucker and later as a farmer. Life was not always easy, and she could never fully relax until Jake was safely home at night.
Starting in 1957, Jake and Annie traveled extensively—to Banff, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona, British Columbia, and other places across North America. They cherished these trips, both as a couple and with friends, of whom they had many.
Jake and Annie were active members of the Plum Coulee Bergthaler Church. Annie enjoyed singing duets with Jake and teaching Sunday School.
Annie was a talented cook who enjoyed caring for her garden and the large yard on the farm. She enjoyed needlepoint, creating many works of art for her family over the years.
Annie was deeply committed to her family and enjoyed socializing. She took pride in her appearance and enjoyed being well-dressed, with jewelry and makeup. She had a closet full of lovely clothes, and the Salem staff kindly assisted her with jewelry and makeup. A favourite pastime in her later years was watching Jets games and recordings of Southern Gospel quartets.
Annie leaves to mourn:
Brian and Dorothy – their children Cameron (Alana), Monica, Daniel (Tracy), and Jennifer, and their three grandsons Nathan, Luke, and Hudson.
Reg and Dorothy – their sons Lance (Vickie), Ross (Holly), and Blake (Sarah Joy), and their six grandchildren Quinn, Chase, Jessa, Everett, Ethan, and Spencer.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law Mary Derksen.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, her brothers-in-law, two nephews, her husband, and her daughter-in-law (Susan).
Sincere thanks to the amazing staff at Salem Home—you blessed Annie’s days with your kindness. Brian and Dorothy, and Reg and Dorothy, were deeply encouraged by the many kind remarks and genuine expressions of sorrow from the staff.
Annie was a dedicated church attender and held a deep, unwavering faith in Christ. We know she spent many hours in prayer for her family.
