August 9, 1956 - October 2, 2025
Art Neufeld was born on August 9th, 1956, to Cornelius P and Helen (Wolfe) Neufeld at the Bethel Hospital in Winkler. He was the second oldest of five siblings. Art completed grade 8 at the Osterwick Elementary School, and from there, together with his oldest brother, Pete, they helped their mom work on the family dairy and grain farm. Pete and Art had to mature quickly, due to the passing of their dad at a young age, taking on responsibilities and learning skills well beyond what any boys their age normally would.
Art and Pete spent a lot of time together, with various hobbies and sporting activities. They both bought brand new Kawasaki motorcycles and even did a little bit of drag racing with them at Gimli Speedway. Weekly karate lessons in Morden resulted in them coming home with very sore knuckles at times. Art’s first car, a green Pontiac Ventura inspired his interest in all things cars and racing, (including racing on Highway 32). Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, archery, guns and target shooting.
On May 31st, 1981, at the age of 24, Art was baptized upon confession of his faith at the Winkler EMM Church.
Art met Linda Elias in June of 1977 through his sister, Mary Anne, as she and Linda were high school friends. In April 1982, Art pursued his courtship with Linda, and they were married just over a year later on May 7th, 1983, at the Zion Church in Schanzenfeld. They were blessed with two daughters, Velda and Kendra. Art enjoyed spending time with his daughters, taking them for tractor rides around the yard and on the field, target shooting with pellet guns, launching potatoes out of the potato gun he crafted, and ice fishing trips to Stephenfield, Rock Lake and Swan Lake. Velda and Kendra joined the Winkler Junior Rifle Club, where he became an instructor. He was very proud of them, as they were almost as proficient a sharpshooter as he was.
Art believed in expanding his knowledge and continuing his education. One of the ways he showed this was achieving his GED in 1990. He loved to read and watch movies and tv documentaries about the history of the American frontier, the history of war and the military.
Art started working at Lode King Industries in May of 1982, where he progressed through several roles, but worked most of his career there on the wiring of trailers, and teaching others his master wiring skills. Art retired from Lode King on January 1st, 2020.
There were endless retirement projects on his to do list, including house renovations, fixing up a cabin, fishing, shooting and restoring multiple cars, including one for his intended future career in drag racing. Art was a master of all trades and seemed to be able to successfully accomplish any task he would tackle, including, but not limited to vehicle and farm equipment repairs, restoring antiques, house renovations, farming, pig butchering, and building his workshop and outbuildings. He designed and built shop equipment, a tractor loader, and multiple grain truck boxes.
On October 5th, 2021, Art became a proud grandpa to his first granddaughter, Cove Lyric. Spending time with her was very important to him, with many trips made to Winnipeg to enjoy his role as a new grandpa. On February 12th, 2024, his second granddaughter, Vale Chorus, was born. His granddaughter’s melted his heart in a new way, and he thrived on their love and fun times.
A major accident at home on June 15th, 2022, altered the direction of his plans, hopes and dreams. He suffered major burns to 40 percent of his upper body and was taken to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg by STARS Air Ambulance. Art underwent major skin graft surgery, determinedly fought through life threatening injuries and was able to return home after 41 days, surprising the medical staff with his progress and recovery. He worked hard to regain his strength as he was very determined to get back to his retirement plans.
In November of 2022, he faced another devastating blow when he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. True to his nature, he continued to fight for his life and was determined to beat it and continue with his retirement plans and being an active and loving part of his kids and granddaughter’s lives. Art fought courageously, never losing his faith in God as his Shepherd.
With the daily support from Linda and additional support from family, Art was able to remain mostly at their country home of 37 years until he was admitted to the hospital a week before his passing. On October 2nd, 2025, with family by his side, Art left this world to begin his journey in heaven.
He leaves behind to mourn, his spouse, Linda, two daughters, Velda Neufeld-Siganporia (Farhad), Kendra Neufeld; and two granddaughters, Cove and Vale. Also surviving him are two sisters, Mary Anne Neufeld, Martha Friesen (Leonard) and one brother, Ed Neufeld (Gloria), sister-in-law Helena Neufeld, and many nieces and nephews, his mother-in-law, two in-law siblings and their families. He was predeceased by his father, Cornelius P. Neufeld, his mother, Helen Neufeld, and his brother, Pete Neufeld.
The family would like to thank the amazing and skilled staff of STARS Air Ambulance, the HSC Burn Unit, Cancer Care Manitoba and all departments at Boundary Trails Health Centre for their compassionate care and support throughout his difficult and extended fight to remain here with his family. Thank you also to Omar and Areli from Flavors of Mexico, who provided the family with so much delicious food over these last few difficult days. In lieu of flowers, any donations may be made to STARS Air Ambulance, an organization that held special meaning for Art, as he once benefited from their life-saving care.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept my faith.
