Barry Austin Stedman
May 27, 1935 – July 28, 2026
On July 28, 2026, at Carman Memorial Hospital, Barry passed away at the age of 91.
He is survived by his son John; daughter Dorothy (Russ) Johannson; grandchildren Ian (Ana) Boughton, Allie (Matthew) Boughton, and Katie (Aaron) Hoekstra; 7 great-grandchildren; niece Christine (Dean) McKinnon; nephew Barry (Alyssa) Harrison; and cousin Howie Larke. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys, his parents Cliff and Phyllis, his sister Gail Harrison, and his close cousin Joan Larke.
Barry was born in Virden MB, while his father was stationed there for Manitoba Hydro. As a young child, the family moved to Winnipeg (Fort Rouge), where he attended elementary and high school (Tec Voc). His first job was with Manitoba Hydro helping bring service to rural areas. It was during this time that he met a special girl from Belmont who would eventually change his life.
Sadly, his father passed away in 1959, when Barry was just 24. He returned home to be with his mother and sister, moving to NW-24-7-6 in the RM of Dufferin/St. Daniel. With the guidance of his uncle, Bob Stedman, Barry learned to farm — growing crops and raising pigs and cattle.
Many years later, he looked up that special Belmont girl in the phone book. The picture going with this obituary is from the happiest day of his life, when on June 25, 1977, he married Gladys Rowe in Belmont MB. Gladys and her daughter Dorothy then moved to the farm in Carman where shortly after, the family welcomed a new addition when son John was born in August 1978. Barry's hobbies centered around the outdoors and providing for his family: combining, baling, tending animals, growing a garden, clearing snow, getting firewood ready, road trips in his 1973 green GMC half-ton, time with his border collie, Patches and family dinners together after a long day's work.
In the late 1990s, Barry & Gladys made a difficult decision to move into Carman. They missed farm life, but slowly adapted, and the move brought them closer to John, who lived just two blocks away. Ever the tough old farmer, Barry was still running the snowblower and cutting grass at 80. He was a devoted fan of the Jets, Bombers, and Blue Jays. In February 2025, the family lost Gladys. John and Barry lived together during the tough time that followed, leaning on each other through their grief.
Barry was strong, hardworking, down to earth, quiet, witty, and devoted to his family. He lived his entire life with essential tremors, which made things like handwriting and being in large crowds difficult at times.
Dad, I love you and am so proud of the life you lived. It brings me comfort knowing you are with Mom now.
