With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Benjamin Thiessen, age 82 — beloved Husband, Dad, Poppa, and Friend.
Ben was the devoted husband of Glenda, proud father to Tracey and Holly, and a very proud Poppa to Matt and Jayden — a role he cherished. A mechanic by trade, his greatest accomplishment was his family, and he never missed an opportunity to let us know how much he loved us.
As soon as the snow melted, you could find him on the golf course with friends — where the score mattered far less than the stories told afterward. He was a loyal fan of NASCAR, especially the races at Daytona Beach, cheering on his favorite drivers and teasing the rest of us that cheered on his rivals. Fishing trips in May long weekend and later Crowduck were a highlight of the year filled with laughter, tall tales about the one that got away, and just enough truth to keep things interesting.
And when the Manitoba weather grew tiresome, Ben and Glenda could often be found soaking up the sun in Puerto Vallarta — where he perfected the fine art of relaxation and drinking a few cervezas.
Ben leaves behind a family who adored him and friends who will miss his steady presence, quick humour, and unwavering loyalty. Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in imagining him drinking a good cup of coffee, finding the smoothest fairways, and enjoying the ultimate front-row seat at the Daytona 500.
A private service will be held for his family in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a foundation of your choosing in Ben’s memory.
In honour of Ben, the family encourages you to raise a glass, tell a good story (even if it grows a little with each telling), and hug your loved ones tight.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered — forever Glenda’s “BennyBob”.
