Husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather
February 20, 1932 – May 14, 2026
Bernie Loeppky passed away on May 14, 2026. He was 94 years old.
Bernie was born on February 20, 1932, in Halbstadt, Manitoba. He had 17 siblings, all of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Helen (Peters). They lived most of those years in Winkler.
Bernie came from a poor family, but he was determined to get an education. With the support of teachers and the community, he managed to attend MCI and later went on to university. He was a teacher, a pastor, a school principal, the Northern District Conference minister and the Executive Director at Eden Mental Health Centre. After he “retired” he became an independent consultant.
Bernie was a man of faith and had a strong belief in Anabaptist theology, especially the peace position. He and Helen were charter members of Grace Mennonite Church in Winkler. It was important to Bernie to demonstrate this faith in his living. He also spent time writing about his faith and faith issues. He supported the church and its outreach, as well as community projects that promoted the well-being of community members. He took great satisfaction in being part of the development of the Crocus and Cedar housing projects for seniors.
Bernie was always curious and learning. He could engage on many varied topics, including theology, history, current events, and politics. And he was an extrovert, so he loved these discussions.
Although Bernie had many health issues in recent years, he remained a positive, optimistic person. He rarely complained and tried to remain independent. He continued to maintain an attitude of hope, right to the end.
In addition to his wife, Helen, Bernie is survived by four children, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, of whom he was immensely proud. He was unconditionally accepting and supportive.
Children: Bernie (Sharon), Al (Irene), Robert (Linda Nichols) and Carol (Ren Amell)
Grandchildren: Devin Crow, Aaron (Adrienne Schellenberg), Reuben (Rebecca Wiens), Dan (Claire Soubry), Mark, Eric, Alex (Andrew Brisbin), Kelby (Jeff Van Rosmalen), Annaliese (Matthew Greenwood), Sandy (Sarah DeMerchant) and Matthew (Brittan)
Great-grandchildren: Emery, Liam, Jasper, Juniper, Iris and Brynn
The family would like to express their appreciation to Home Care, Emergency Services, and Hospital staff for their kind care.
Go in peace, dad. You’ve been loved.
