Brett will be lovingly remembered by his children, Brendan and Owen, and their mother, Jessica Lautenschlager; his parents, Brian and Sheila Casper; his sister, Jackie (Shane) Hansen; and his niece and nephew, Emma and Hank. He is also survived by his in-laws, Earl and Connie Lautenschlager, and their family.
Brett was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Alberta, where he spent countless hours playing hockey and baseball and developed a lifelong love of animals. These early passions stayed with him throughout his life and were especially evident when he became a father.
He spent his early adult years in Edmonton and Calgary, working at various auto dealerships while completing his Commerce degree. After several years in the workforce, Brett returned to school and earned his MBA from the University of Alberta in 2012.
Brett met Jessica in 2012 while playing slo-pitch in Calgary. In 2015, they moved to Morden with the promise of a dog—soon fulfilled when Daisy joined the family. Brett and Jessica married in 2016 and welcomed their first son, Brendan, in 2017, followed by Owen two years later. With the arrival of their children, Brett took on the role of stay-at-home dad.
Brett loved sharing his passion for animals and the outdoors with his boys. Trips to the zoo, frog and snake hunting at their special spots around town, and more recently fishing adventures, created cherished memories for Brendan and Owen. He was especially excited to see them develop an interest in hockey and baseball, and it meant a great deal to him to watch his two sons play together on the same hockey team this season.
For many years, Brett faced profound challenges with his mental health and alcohol use disorder—burdens he would never have wished upon anyone. Though we may never fully understand the weight he carried, we find comfort in cherishing the good times we shared and in trusting that he has found lasting peace.
