Cathy Sommer, age 73, Cavalier ND, left this earth on Sunday, August 23rd, 2026, in Cavalier, ND. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Methodist Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held one hour before the time of the service. Burial will be at the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND.
Catherine C. (Stark) Sommer was born on February 2nd, 1953, in Grafton ND, to Adolph and Anna (Schwietzer) Stark. She grew up in rural Neche and graduated from high school in 1970.
On October 10th, 1970, she married Thomas (Tom) Sommer of Cavalier. Shortly after their marriage Tom deployed to Vietnam. During that time Cathy attended Akers Business College in Grand Forks, ND.
Eventually Tom and Cathy settled in Cavalier, where they raised their family. They were blessed with three sons: Chris (Diane) of Devils Lake, ND and their children Chris, Jr. (fiancé Cora Gilmore) and Jeff, Adam (Kathy) of Fargo, ND and their children, Lilianna, and Lorellei, and Mathew (Mary) of Ironwood MI, and their children, Mason (Aster), Madden, and Mila. Cathy was a beautiful soul who was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. She will be deeply missed by her close friends and family, especially her children and grandchildren who she loved very much. She was so very proud of each of them.
Cathy worked for the FSA service agency in Cavalier from the early 1980s until her retirement in December 2001. After her retirement Cathy and Tom enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, going to visit their siblings, and visiting their children and grandchildren. In 2004 Tom and Cathy purchased a lake home in Devils Lake, ND where they spent 5 summers entertaining family and friends, and fishing. There were many memories made there that will last a lifetime. In July of 2008, Tom passed away. A year later Cathy sold the lake house as well as the farm where Tom and Cathy raised their family and moved into Cavalier. Cathy continued to travel and spent several winters in Florida with family and friends to get away from the brutal winters of North Dakota.
Cathy had her health struggles the last couple of years, but she never let her lung disease get her down. She showed tremendous courage and grace until the very end.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents Adolph and Anna, her husband Tom, siblings Louise Dusterhoft, Lois Winzer, Sandra, David, Curtis, and Marvin Stark, and Father-in-law Orland Sommer.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, siblings, Karen Seboe of Park River, Janice (John Hebert) of Bismarck, and Melvin (Kay) Stark, of Cavalier; Mother-in-law Isabelle Sommer, Cavalier; Brothers in in-law, Tim Sommer Pisek, ND, Lynn (Donna) Sommer Washburn, ND, Jackie Stark, Bradenton, FL; Sister-in-law Joni (Donnie) Latozke; and many nieces and nephews.
