It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Clare Laverne Halstead aged 77 years at his residence July 20th, 2025 in Starbuck, Mb.
Clare was Predeceased by his mother Ethel & father Tom Halstead, mother and father in- law Jessie and Walter Schade and brother in-law Rudy Ammeter.
Clare loving Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, Papa and friend. Clare is survived by his beloved wife Sandra of 54 years; dear Sister Sandra Ammeter, Cherished Children and grandchildren; Jeff (Brenda), Tim (Cherie) Three Grandchildren; Andrew (Courtney), Jessica (Jarret) Benjamyn (Brooke) and loyal companion Kayce. Brother in-law to Ron Schade.
Clare was born in Winnipeg Mb, July 11, 1948, to parents Tom and Ethel Halstead. Completing his education at Starbuck School.
Clare and beloved wife Sandra resided on the farm 5 miles south of Starbuck, where Clare’s parents Tom, Ethel and sister Sandra had settled in the Spring of 1948. Clare lived a short time away from the farm in his early adult life but moved back to the farm where Clare and Sandra resided and raised their family. Clare and Sandra were married January 16, 1971, and welcomed son Jeff August 1971 and Tim April 1973. Clare adored and took pride in all that his sons accomplished. Clare taught, mentored and coached his sons to work hard sharing his gift to create, build and repair. Both Jeff and Tim learned how to do the same; Jeff went on to build a career as a carpenter and Tim as mechanic.
Clare a very proud Papa also passed down his love for hunting, fishing, love for cars, trucks and being a big fan of the Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers to Andrew, Jessica and Ben.
Clare loved to hear about and see the cars and trucks his grandchildren were driving and offered his support in repairs as needed. Clare loved a text message from grandchildren sharing all their endeavors and looked forward to being a part of supporting and celebrating all that they were doing.
Clare always a farmer, and a true handyman who had the desire to fix and repair anything. Clare at the age of 18 years old began his career as a mechanic; starting first at Gambles, then Mid West Diesel in Winnipeg. Later for 23 years Clare worked at Grey Goose as a mechanic and foreman. Clare established lifelong friendships and shared many memories of his time working there. Clare retired from Grey Goose; June 19th, 1993, to farm and work full time in the business Clare and Sandra established in 1991; Halstead’s garage. Clare a mechanic to many family members, fellow farmers and friends in the Starbuck and surrounding area.
Clare readily and generously provided help and support and wisdom to family and friends near and far. Often, he could be heard saying “I will see what I can do “. Clare could often be found tinkering with something, repairing and fixing it to be new again.
Always never far was Sandra his cherished wife who he had full confidence in supporting him in these endeavors. Sandra learned the wrenches, how to use them, how to hold a flashlight, and they enjoyed farming for many years together before retiring in 2013. Sandra has been seen in a tractor bucket, climbing ladders, or on a roof providing assistance. Later together they shared their love for gardening and keeping the lawn looking nice. Together they mowed the grass, each with their own lawn mower.
Clare and Sandra shared a love for traveling. Together they enjoyed many trips near and far. Shorter trips to Okotoks, Alberta and Thompson Mb to visit Jeff and Tim's families when they previously lived there. Together they traveled on a 23-day motorcycle trip West through mountains. Wintering for 4 years in Arizona and Texas. Shared a couple of cruise trip adventures with Clare’s sister and husband Rudy. Also traveling to Mexico, Cuba, Cancun.
Clare's love for hunting led him to many hunting trips creating many memories with friends to Melita, Mb.
In Most recent years Clare and Sandra traveled for 13 years fishing to Hide Away Lodge, in Northwestern Ontario.
Clare and Sandra together enjoyed summer days going to car shows with his 67 Chevelle Malibu.
Most cherished were times with family, dear neighbours and friends.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to Trinity Lutheran Church.
