Dad was born on January 31, 1948 in Mexico to his parents Peter and Aganetha Krahn. At the age of 14 his family moved to Canada. Dad was baptized upon the confession of his faith in May 1969, and the Blumenfeld Reinland Mennonite Church by Bishop Peter Rempel.
During his growing up years, they moved frequently. At the age of 18 they moved to Rosengart, Manitoba. Here he met and married Mom on July 13, 1969. They were blessed with 8 children, one of whom passed away in infancy.
During his life, dad worked construction, building many homes. He loved his work and took pride in the work he completed. I’m pretty sure every one of us kids has or had a part of his craftsmanship in our homes. We always knew who to ask for advice on our projects! When dad retired, he worked some odd jobs until his health started failing.
In 2018 dad and mom moved to Winkler into an apartment and that meant dad had to downsize his tool collection which took a toll on him. He struggled with finding purpose in his daily activities, but eventually he found purpose in visiting those that couldn’t drive and giving them rides when they needed them.
Dad had many struggles in his life, but he kept his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In our visits, he often talked about his faith and that he was waiting for the day that he would meet Jesus.
Growing up, dad would remind us to pray and read our Bible. It was important to him that we have a relationship with Christ. He loved his family and he often talked about how his prayer was that they would all live for the Lord.
His joy was when his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, would come for a visit. No matter if you came yesterday, today he waited again! He loved to sit outside, watching the world. He could tell you all about nature and the things he noticed when he sat there. He loved flowers and his little garden in the back. The day before he passed, he still worried about the carrots still in the ground. He couldn’t wait to eat the fresh little potatoes he grew.
Over the last few years, dad became more weak and not able to do much physical activity. He still tried to do yardwork and some things, even though it took a few extra hours.
In the beginning of October, he started feeling unwell. On Thursday, October 9 he had a CT scan in the morning diagnosing him with a blood clot in his left lung. That same afternoon he got called to the ER by his family doctor saying that it was critical. Five hours later he got sent home being told it wasn’t that critical. He was put on blood thinners in hopes it would dissolve the blood clot. Over the weekend his breathing got difficult making him very tired. His health deteriorated and on Wednesday evening, he went to bed earlier than normal. It was only a few hours later that he got to rest in the arms of Jesus.
Dad leaves to mourn his wife Katherine, of 56 years, 4 sons, 3 daughters, and their spouses, 32 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and 2 sister-in-law‘s, and their spouses. He is predeceased by 1 daughter in infancy, his parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister, 1 brother in law, and 1 sister in law.
Thank you to the Winkler police, the EMS crew, Wiebe funeral home, and to Bishop Dave Penner, the song leaders, the serving group, and to anyone else that helped us in anyway. A big thank you to everyone that came out to support our family with so much love and prayers.
