David began his long life when he was born to Gerhard and Aganetha Harms on September 11, 1925, at the family residence in the village of Reinland, Manitoba. He spoke often of how he was the first of his ten siblings to be born in Canada, the first 5 having been born in the Ukraine. “I was in the middle, the comfort zone.” he would say. His first 19+ years were spent in Reinland, where he went to school (grade 8) and met his future wife, Margaret.
In April 1945, Gerhard moved his family to Snowflake, Manitoba where they continued farming. A few years later, David purchased his own piece of land to farm, and on July 8, 1951, he married his sweetheart, Margaret and they began their life together. In short order three little ones were added to the family – Allen, Judy, and George. After a span of time, a fourth, Carolyn would join them.
By his own admission farming was not David’s first choice of vocation. But as so often , life’s circumstances take us down paths we have not anticipated. But David determined he would throw 100% effort into the work, he believed, God ordained for him. Not withstanding, as the years unfolded, three passions would fill any spaces in the farming life. Baseball, which he played since young. Community service as he called it, in the forms of numerous boards, 33+ years in municipal service, long and dedicated service to his church, and of course fishing, a passion he followed until failing health no longer allowed.
David was predeceased by his wife Margaret (2018) his son George (2008), parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
He is survived by son Allen (Irma) Harms, Judy (Bunseedar) Goberdhan, daughter-in-law Lori (George) Harms, daughter Carol (Bob) Peters, 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and many others in a large extended family. Rest in peace David.
