(nee Hiebert)
May 5, 1943 - January 11, 2026
Dorothy Giesbrecht of Winkler, aka as Dora, passed away peacefully , on January 11th, 2026, at the age of 82 years, at the Notre Dame hospital with her children by her side. She was born on May 5, 1943 to Peter and Maragaret Hiebert, and was the last born of 6 sisters and 2 brothers (one of which died in infancy).
She struggled with her most recent leg fracture and had a very short battle with pnuemonia and pulmonary edema which quickly became too much for her body to fight any longer. It was one year and one day later she finally went to be with her husband France, who she so dearly missed.
Left to mourn are their children (spouses): Rick (Sara) Giesbrecht; Jeff (Bonnie) Giesbrecht; Peggy (John) Peters; Melissa (Greg) Krahn; Anthony Giesbrecht.
Six grandchildren (spouses): Terry Giesbrecht (Jo); Brittney Krahn (Max); Jayver Krahn (Alysha); Megan Hildebrandt (Jeremy); Colton Peters (Marilynn); Misty Giesbrecht (Damien)
Four Great Grandchildren: Aiden, Lexi, Amelia, Isabelle, (Silas)
Dorothy is also survived by one sister and her husband: Margaret & George Ens. And one sister in law and her husband: Tina & Ben Hiebert
She was predeceased by her husband Francis Giesbrecht; by her parents; one brother in infancy; one older brother; 5 sisters; and one grand daughter- Brooklyn Giesbrecht.
Church and faith were important to Dorothy, and she was baptized upon confession of her faith in October 1962. She then married Francis Giesbrecht on November 16, 1962, in the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. Shortly after they moved to a farm east of Rosengart, MB, and were blessed with 5 children together; 3 boys and 2 girls. They shared a devoted 62 years of marriage together; raising their children, crops and pigs; putting food on the table, and providing for their family. Dorothy worked hard at gardening, canning, cooking, cleaning and sewing; and when her children were old enough she took on jobs such as sewing curtains for Triple E, or building cupboard doors for Precision Wood work; as well as other odd jobs to supplement income and put her many talents to use.
Dorothy grew up in Reinfeld, Manitoba. As she got older, she worked in the Winnipeg King George hospital as a dietary aide to help her widow mother financially. She took the bus to the city for the week, came back home for weekends; and on one particular day, as Dorothy got off the bus to go home, a car passed the bus and hit her. She endured many hours of surgery along with a lifetime of chronic pain.
Church was important and after marriage they attended the Gretna Bergthaler Church, and later on after moving to Winkler in 2016 they attended the Winkler Bergthaler Church.
Dorothy was a great cook, a very hospitable person, and always had an open door. Her most precious treasures in life were her children, grand/great grand children. She enjoyed life and loved to play board games or puzzle with her sisters and children. Sharing stories, laughing and having fun with the people around her. Bowling was a past time she and her husband enjoyed together in winter. Sometimes they would travel and she would always encourage others to do the same.
The Giesbrecht family would like to extend special thanks to the Notre Dame Hospital staff for their great care and kindness. To George Ens and to Victor Engbrecht for your encouring words and prayers for Dorothy especially over this past difficult year. And to all those who prayed, brought food, paid a visit or gave words of encouragement, and cared for Dorothy as well. Blessings to you.
In lieu of flowers donations may me made to the Notre Dame Hospital.
