December 17, 1954 - May 18, 2025
Ernest Peters, age 70, of Winkler, Manitoba passed away on May 18, 2025, at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia with family by his side.
Ernest, also known as Ernie, was a man of faith, who loved making others laugh with his jokes and stories and cared deeply about his family, friends, colleagues, and community.
He is survived by his loving wife Irene Peters; daughter Tanya Derksen and partner Manju Sharma; son Derek Dexter and wife Sherriann, kids Raine and Cadence; son Clinton Peters; and daughter Tracy Friesen and husband Tyler, kids Ava, Charlotte, and Isabelle, plus his father John I. Peters and siblings Jake, John, Anne Enns, Harry, and David Peters and their families. He was predeceased by his mother Katherina Peters, brother-in-law Frank Unger and his wife Marge, and nephew Mark Peters.
Ernest was born on December 17, 1954, at Bethel Hospital in Winkler, Manitoba, to parents John I. and Katherina Peters. He grew up in Osterwick and later the family moved to a farm south of Morden. He was the fourth child in a family of six children and loved spending time with all his siblings as a child and as an adult.
He first met his wife Irene when they were in the same elementary class from Grade 1 to 5. They met again in 1973 and soon started dating. They were married on October 6, 1974, in Winkler. This last fall, Ernest and Irene celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Ernest was always a family man. He and Irene had four children together, Tanya, Derek, Clinton, and Tracy. Ernest loved to spend time with his kids whether it was game night with the family, getting Derek and Clint together for a game of hockey in the basement, or listening to Tanya and Tracy play piano. Ernest planned many family trips across Canada and into the U.S. with his family and always made sure there was a jam-packed schedule of sightseeing, learning, and good food.
Ernest adored his five grandchildren, Raine, Cadence, Ava, Charlotte, and Isabelle. He welcomed them over for visits anytime they wanted to come and always had a list of stories and jokes ready to make them laugh. Ernest made sure that all family gathering meals ended with his favourite food, Irene’s homemade apple, blueberry, or rhubarb pie where it could be served as dessert, as night snack, as breakfast, as lunch, or as any meal you wanted. 😊
Ernest found his professional passion in accounting. He became a Certified General Accountant, or CGA, in 1988 at the age of 33. With this designation, now called a CPA, he became a trusted business and tax advisor to many clients and took his responsibilities seriously. He joined the accounting firm Hermiston & Brent in 1989. In 1993, Ernest and his partners Dale Gislason, Saul Targownik, and Mel Verin opened up Gislason, Targownik, Peters with offices in Winkler and Winnipeg. He loved being an accountant, working with clients, building a business, and using his skillset in the church and community. Even after he stepped down as a full-time partner in 2008 due to health issues, Ernest still wanted to contribute to GTP and worked there as an associate and proud past partner until his passing.
Ernest was known by everyone for his infectious laugh and joyful demeanor. He always had time for coffee with his siblings or friends and loved to spend an evening visiting and catching up or going for a ride in his Mustang.
On May 8, 2025, Ernest and Irene flew to Philadelphia to visit their daughter Tanya who lives there. They spent the weekend meeting her friends and colleagues, attending a concert, and sightseeing. On May 11, he woke up and asked to be taken to the hospital. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and stayed for observation at Pennsylvania Hospital overnight where he developed further complications. He passed away at the hospital on Sunday, May 18, 2025, with family present. Ernest will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the community.
