Fred was born on February 20, 1944, in Morden, Manitoba. He grew up west of Morden before the family moved to the farm in Roseisle. From a young age, Fred learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance. He began farming early in life where he learned the lessons that shaped his strong work ethic and practical skills.
Fred had a deep passion for trucking, welding, mechanics, and all things fabrication. A natural builder and problem-solver, Fred was rarely without a project on the go. He crafted his own four-wheel-drive tractor; rebuilt the family farmhouse, multiple times; and was always planning the next improvement or repair. His hands were rarely idle, and his mind was always working.
After the passing of his mother, Fred took over the family farm and faithfully supported his younger brother Tom, demonstrating his strong sense of duty and loyalty to family. In 1986, Fred married Lilla Reid, welcoming her and her two sons to the farm. Fred raised the boys as his own, offering them stability, guidance, and unconditional love.
Above all else, Fred was known for his kindness, patience, and generosity with his time. He always had room for one more coffee, one more cookie, and one more story. Whether you came with a problem to solve, a story to share, or simply needed someone to listen, Fred was always there. He always had a joke or story and deeply valued every visit.
Fred will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His steady presence, practical wisdom, and warm heart leave a legacy that will be carried on through generations.
A service honouring Fred’s life will be held on March 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Roland United Church, followed by a gathering at the Roland Hall, where family and friends are invited to share memories and celebrate a life well lived.
