George J. Whelan was born December 11, 1932 on the family farm near Crystal, ND the son of the late James Joseph “Joe” and Marion (Colby) Whelan. He attended school in Crystal, graduating in 1951. He attended the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo and obtained an Associate Degree in Agriculture. Following his education he returned home to farm. He was united in marriage to Mae Severson on October 23, 1955 in St. Charles, MN. The couple made their home on the farm near Crystal.
Over his lifetime George was a member of the Valley Public School Board, North Valley Vocational Board, Pembina County Farm Bureau Board, Hoople Farmer’s Grain Board and served as a 4-H leader. George and Mae enjoyed spending time with friends and family over the years in their winter home in Apache Junction, AZ as well as fishing in Warroad, MN and Devils Lake, ND.
George is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mae; two sons: Jeffrey (Greta) Whelan and Douglas (Barbara) Whelan both of Crystal, ND; two granddaughters: Kate (Derrick) Suda, Grafton, ND and Grace Whelan, Fargo, ND; a great granddaughter, Nadia Sjursen and great grandson, Cole Suda; his brother, Richard (Cleone) Whelan, Crystal, ND; sisters-in-law, Rose (Kenny) Boyum and Betty Tryan along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved granddaughter, Anna Whelan Sjursen.
