Ross was born on January 22, 1944 in Manitou, MB. He was the 5th and youngest child of Gordon and Ellen “Ella” (Scharf) Sprung. He grew up on the family farm north-west of Darlingford, MB and attended Middleton country school. He went to Manitou High School and then attended the Manitoba Institute of Technology in Winnipeg, graduating with a Diesel Mechanics certificate in 1964.
He worked in the diesel mechanics field for a few years in Winnipeg, at Brooks Equipment and other diesel shops. He was proud to be part of the equipment maintenance team for the Red River Floodway construction in the 1960’s. For a short while, he worked with his family on the farm and then began employment at Canada Packers in Manitou in the late 1960’s.
In January of 1971, Ross met Linda Meggison of Goodlands, MB, who had recently begun working in Morden. They were married on June 17, 1972 in Goodlands, MB and established their home in Manitou.
In 1977 Ross started employment as an Equipment Operator at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Morden, a job that he loved for over 30 years.
In 1978 Ross and Linda moved to Morden. Their first daughter, Janelle, was born in 1981 and their second daughter, Meghan, in 1983.
Ross retired from the Research Station in the spring of 2010. In the following years, Ross and Linda celebrated the weddings of their daughters and joyful arrival of their four granddaughters.
Although he experienced Parkinson’s disease in his final years, Ross lived with a cheerful attitude and appreciated a good visit with anyone at any time. Ross’ daughters and granddaughters (“his girls”) were the joy of his life, as he supported them in their many and varied activities.
Ross is predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Ella Sprung, brothers, Harold and Allan Sprung, sister, Ruth Cook, and sister-in-law Elaine Sprung. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, Linda, his wife of 52 years; daughter Janelle (Cameron) Chawrun, Emily and Madelyn; daughter Meghan (Kevin) McKinnon, Riatta, Raegan and step-grandson Caleb; brother Maurice Sprung, sister-in-law Crystal Conrad Sprung, brother-in-law Dwight Cook, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to give a heartfelt thank you to the many caregivers at Village West in Winkler. It was Ross’ home for almost 4 years. The kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff made him and our family feel loved.
