Gilbert was born to Verne Sr. and Eva (Vaughn) Hornbaker on September 27, 1944, in Grafton, ND. He grew up in the Backoo area and graduated from Park River High School.
Throughout his life, Gilbert owned and operated Cavalier Texaco, worked for many farmers, and drove truck for Mayo Construction and Flickertail Paving for several years.
Gilbert was a member of the Tongue River Masonic Lodge and the Northeast North Dakota Pioneer Machinery Association. His hobbies included going to vintage machinery and threshing shows, ice fishing, and spending time in his man cave with his friends.
Gilbert is survived by his half-brother, William Hornbaker, Ketchikan, AK; nephews, David (Stella) Stark and Stefan (Ricarda) Stark and other extended family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and sister Joyce.
Services for Gilbert will be held at a later date.
