December 23, 1924 – February 01, 2023
Peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the Carman Boyne Lodge, Alice Hanna passed away at the age of 98 years. She will be sadly missed by her children, Kelly (Doug), Garth (Audrey), as well as her 3 granddaughters, Liza (Brett) and their children Brennan and Quinn, Jaime (Ian) and their children Kyra and Katie, and Alyssa (Sean). Also, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends. Alice was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1986, her brothers and sister in laws, William and Geraldine, Alan and Shirley, Lawrence and Joan.
Mom worked hard during her entire life, starting with the hard times in the dirty 30’s, helping on the farm and at Macdonald Aircraft during the war. She married Donald Hanna October 2, 1953 and she called Brunkild home for many years. Mom was never one to sit still, she was always busy and involved in the community. She worked at the Brunkild Hall, Kliewers Store & Post Office, Brunkild Hotel (Beer Parlor), and she took pride in being the caretaker at the Brunkild Luthern Church for over 40 years. As an active member of the community, mom started volunteering as a young adult on the Brunkild Hall Board. She continued through the years volunteering at many community events, such as Fall Suppers, Church functions, Curling Bonspiels to name a few.
Her love of sports started at a young age when she would play baseball and hockey on the pond with her 3 brothers and many cousins. During the Winter months she also liked to curl. Her love of sports continued through her entire life enjoying season tickets to the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers and occasional tickets to the Goldeyes. Aside from her many sporting outings, she absolutely loved her Bingo nights and would never miss her monthly trips to the casinos with all her friends.
Family was a priority to mom, especially when the grandkids and great grandkids arrived. Many Sunday dinners, family vacations and family gatherings, created many life- time happy memories. Sharing her love of gardening, cooking, knitting, and baking, gave her great fulfilment. Her favorite pastimes were Crosswords, reading, puzzles, and in the summer picking all her dandelions by hand (including all the neighbours), and in the Winter keeping her sidewalk PERFECTLY clean! She was famous for her pecan tarts, cinnamon buns, dill pickles, and apple pie, which she shared generously with many friends and neighbours.
Mom loved her independence, and although she never took a road test, managed to keep her Drivers Licence till she was 91! Moms quick wit and her dry sense of humour would always keep everyone entertained. She was very strong willed, always “told it as it is!”, and her ‘stubbornness’ prevailed her. She maintained a strong faith in God throughout her entire life, and made sure she passed this onto her family. Mom lived a full life, she was always proud to call Brunkild home, and will not only be missed by her loving family, but also by many neighbours, friends.
The family would like to extend a Grateful Thank You to the Carman Hospital and the Carman Boyne Lodge for their compassionate care and support over the last 2 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MS Society, the Carman Boyne Lodge or a charity of your choice.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brunkild with Pastor Trudy Thorarinson officiating.
