May 12, 1935 – April 21, 2025
Mom passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Salem Home, Winkler MB surrounded by her family. She went to be with Jesus just 3 weeks shy of her 90th birthday.
Mom is survived by her children Sharon (Ken), Gordon (Sandra), Don (MaryAnn), Ken (Kathy), Shirley (Bernie), daughter in law Becky, Sandra (Jerry), Sheila (Cam), 22 grandchildren & their spouses, 24 great grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her parents, Henry & Helena Heppner; her husband John, her son Marvin, 6 brothers & 3 sisters.
Mom was born on a farm north of Horndean, MB on May 12, 1935. She was the 6th of 10 children. She went to a country school in Melba district. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith. Mom & Dad attended church their whole lives and it was important for them that their family knew Jesus and lived a life for Him.
Mom and dad grew up as neighbours not knowing one another. Shortly after dad returned home from working at the cannery in Aylmer, Ontario, Mom and Dad met. They were married on December 9, 1956. They were married almost 42 years.
Mom & dad began their married life in Winnipeg, soon after they moved to the Wiebe family farm where they raised their family of 8 children and spent 32 years farming the land and taking care of the livestock.
Mom worked hard on the farm, made all our food, home baked goods, canned our homegrown veggies, and the cases of fruit dad would pick up in town. She often sewed special clothing items for us. We always knew we would be well dressed, well fed and loved beyond measure. Us kids often wondered if mom had more than 24 hours in her day. Occasionally on a Sunday, the family would go on special day trips which we all have fond memories of.
During long winter evenings, after chores were completed, mom loved to crochet doilies, afghans, knit scarves, embroider pillowcases & hankies. These were special keepsakes for her children and grandchildren. These are the times where mom taught us to keep our hands busy, Mom was determined for us to also learn her crafts.
In 1991, mom and dad moved to a new development at the south end of Winkler. Here, Mom and dad enjoyed the best of both worlds; the convenience of town, as well as the solitude and connection with the land and the farm. After dad’s passing in 1998, mom missed dad terribly, and to occupy her time, she expanded the size of her flower gardens, also planting more lilies. We called her the lily queen.
On May 27, 2016, mom moved to Salem Home. Mom loved her time at Salem; she appreciated all the planned activities, enjoyed colouring with her family, puzzles, playing games, music ministry and having her nails painted bright red.
Mom was a life-long lover of music. Until her dying day, she enjoyed all the music programs at Salem. As her abilities allowed, she would sing along, move her arms and ‘dance’ in her chair, tap her toes and add her voice to the mix.
Mom treasured her family. She loved having her grandchildren over for sleepovers, going to their hockey games, and picking flowers from her garden with them. Many times, mom could be found on the floor, playing with her grandkids. They were the delight of her heart and she poured much love into their lives. Mom’s legacy of love and faith will be carried forward to the next generation and beyond.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Salem Home for the exceptional love and care she received throughout her time there. But particularly in her final days. The staff cared for her with love, honour and respect. It was so appreciated.
