On January 1, 2026, with friends and family by her side, Hilda Ann Harness, youngest daughter of Walter and Doreen Harness, passed away at Carman Memorial Hospital. She showed indomitable spirit, determination and strength throughout her life. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Hilda was born on December 24, 1956, in Carman, Manitoba. She started her life on the family farm in Elm Creek before moving to Carman with the family in 1958. She spent the next 5 years in Carman until the family returned to the farm in 1964. Hilda remained on the farm caring for her parents and living her best life with her horses and farm animals. Any free time she had was spent riding her horses around the area or out on trail rides further away.
She had several different jobs throughout her lifetime. Her first job was taking care of a young boy, before moving on to do custodial work at Carman Hospital. At the same time, she did many housecleaning jobs for a number of people around town and the surrounding area. She later moved on to work as a custodian at Carman Collegiate for 23 years.
In 2006, she had a devastating horse accident, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. Throughout the next year and a half, she showed her strength and unbeatable spirit as she pushed through the many obstacles and hardships to be able to walk again when many said she would never do it.
She continued to love horses, and once again she would not accept defeat when others said she would not ride again. The first time the opportunity presented itself, she was up on a horse and riding. In 2010 she purchased a miniature horse named Klondike who became the love of her life. She would spend hours with her horse at her brother’s farm, teaching him new tricks, perfecting his show skills and driving techniques. She loved to get in the cart to drive him whether it was in the show ring or just around the pasture. Her smiles were the biggest and brightest when she was with her Klondike.
In the past few years, she loved to spend time in the summer with her brother Wade driving the trails on his farm in the side by side and having wiener roasts out at his cabin in the bush. She loved to sit by the fire and cook those hot dogs and then have her meal out in the sunshine and fresh air.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary, Linda (Bryan Dahling) and Kathy and brothers Wade and Ken (Pat) as well as nieces, Trish (Rick) Aubin and Wendy (Jean) Parvais and their children Felix, Abigail and Chantelle and nephew Curtis (Nicole) McCutcheon and their children Graham, Parker, Dawson, Ryder and Nikolas.
The family would like to thank the staff at Carman Memorial Hospital for their excellent care and support during her time there.
