She was born on March 1st, 1952, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the St. Boniface Hospital, to Tina Wolfe and Peter Klassen. She was later adopted by Cornie Unrau. Irene grew up in Chortitz, where she did all her schooling. She was baptized upon her confession in 1970.
Irene was married to Peter Thiessen in 1971. They welcomed their first child Kevin in 1972 and their second child Rhonda in 1975. They were divorced in 1994, and Irene never remarried.
Mom and family moved to Airdrie in 1976 where they made many close friends. She returned to Winkler in 2001 to care for her mom and start a new chapter.
Irene worked in Salem Home for 16 years as an extremely valued worker, trainer and friend. It was here where she found her passion for helping and caring for others. This trait continued throughout her life. After 16 years, in 2015, Irene suffered a major stroke that forced her to give up the job she loved. Shortly after she moved into Salem Home as a resident, where she continued to support staff and other residents, showing off her true passion of the career she had chosen. Even though Irene’s health continued to decline, she continued to have a positive attitude through her 5 years at Salem. Her humor, good nature, and sass defined her. Her faith continued to strengthen and give her comfort.
Irene leaves behind a son Kevin (Andrea), daughter Rhonda (Shane), grandchildren Jadyn, Rylee, Noah, Gavin, and Graydon, brothers Peter and Dave, and sister Esther. She is predeceased by her parents Tina, Peter, and Cornie.
We as a family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful care Irene received during this journey. Thank you to the staff at Salem Home for the warmth and love shown daily. Thank you to the staff at Boundary Trails for making her final days peaceful.
