1931 - 2026
Jack Keating passed away peacefully on Feb 2, 2026 at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 94. Born May 3, 1931 in Russell, MB to Earle and Bessie Keating, he was raised on the family farm in Silverton, graduated from Russell High School in 1948 and U of M (B of Agriculture) in 1952. He worked for Manitoba Pool Elevators before joining Canada Packers Feed, then Poultry Division. Jack supervised the company hatchery in Manitou along with company farms at Portage, Ste. Agathe and Morris. He was instrumental in the formation of the Manitoba Chicken Marketing Board. His employment with Canada Packers lasted over 35 years and he retired in 1988. During this time, he served as President of the Manitoba Hatchery Association, and Sect. Treasurer of the Canadian Hatchery Federation. Following retirement, he served for 8 years on the Manitoba Hatching Egg Commission.
In 1953, Jack married Sheila Dickey of Crandall, raised two children and resided in Windsor Park. In 1981, Jack and Sheila separated. In 1988 he married Joyce Maxwell of Manitou, gaining three adult children. Jack and Joyce retired in 1988 and headed south to Texas and Arizona and enjoyed 17 winters of very active retirement life. In 1991, they settled in Carman, MB. where they made many good friends. In 2023, Jack moved to The Courtyards at Linden Pointe assisted living complex in Winnipeg.
In his younger years, Jack enjoyed playing baseball and hockey in Russell and later enjoyed curling at the Fort Garry and Heather Curling Clubs in Winnipeg. Upon moving to Carman, he tried to wear out the beautiful Carman Golf Course, was an active member of the Legion and spent many hours in his vegetable and flower gardens. More recently he has filled his time cheering on the Bombers, the Jets, as well as watching many golf tournaments and curling events.
Jack was predeceased by his wife Joyce, as well as his first wife Sheila, his brothers Charles and Donald, and his stepson Ross. He is mourned by his daughter Teri (Mike Gartner), grandson Joel (Mariah); son Dean (Debbie), grandsons Chad (Stacey), Drew (Zita) and granddaughter Emma; step daughter Terry (Dawn, Sheri-Lyn, Jacquie, Ryan); stepson Jeff and daughter-in-law Allyson (Kristin, Trinda); step daughter-in-law Lori Maxwell (Angela, Megan, Gerrit); sister Marion McNabb, sister-in-law Patt Keating, many cherished great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Following cremation, a memorial celebration will be held at Carman United Church at 2:00pm, Friday, March 6; interment of ashes in the Greenwood Cemetery in Carman.
