April 4, 1941 - March 17, 2026
Jacob “Jake” Fehr was born on April 4, 1941 to Isaak and Anna Fehr, in Blumenfeld, Chihuahua Mexico. He was the third born of 12 children. Here he worked on his Father’s farm, starting at a very young age.
In June 1961 he was baptized in the Old Colony Mennonite Church in Blumenfeld. On September 17, 1961 Dad married the love of his life, Aganetha Hamm. Together they had 2 sons and 4 daughters.
Dad moved his family to Manitoba from Mexico 2 times, the first time being in June of 1965. After a devastating fire a year and a half later they went back to Mexico and stayed there for another 4 years. In April of 1971 they moved back to Manitoba, living in Schanzenfeld for a few months and then moving back to Reinland where they settled for the next 54 years.
Dad worked for Southern Potato for 15 years, then became a long distance truck driver in 1986. He drove many miles in his time as a truck driver, travelling all over Canada and the United States. He also started helping with Border Valley Water Co-op during this time. On August 31, 1991 Dad had a devastating accident while unloading a grain bin and it changed his life forever. He was forced into early retirement due to his new physical limitations. After some time he was able to get stronger and continued on with the Water Co-op becoming the man that you thought of when there were any water troubles. He held this position for 39 years. Dad also got involved with a lot of volunteer work, already starting before his accident. He was on the board for Valley Rehab (now known as Gateway Resources) and the Reinland Community Center board for many years. He volunteered for Open Circle, which was a prison ministry mission. With Open Circle he would go to Stoney Mountain Penitentiary and visit with the prisoners and even take them out to supervise them at work programs. He spent many years at The Mennonitsche Post and at MCC.
In 2022 Dad’s health began to deteriorate and dementia began to creep in. In 2024 with Dad’s health steadily declining, we had to make the difficult decision to sell the farm and make the move to Winkler. This was very difficult for Dad and unfortunately we watched his health decline and dementia progress even further. We moved Dad to Tabor Home in Morden on February 10, 2026. He was very upset with us at first, but soon became accustomed to life there.
On Monday, March 16th just before 8:00 in the morning we received a phone call from the nurse at Tabor telling us that Dad had become quite sick during the night and that they would be calling the doctor. 30 minutes later we received another phone call, but this time from the doctor that Dad had gone into Septic Shock and it would be prudent for us to come right away. On Tuesday, March 17th after only 36 short days in Tabor Home, surrounded by his family, Dad went to be with our Heavenly Saviour.
Dad is survived by his wife of 64 years and 6 months, Aganetha Fehr; 1 son, Peter (Agatha) Fehr; 3 daughters, Nettie Fehr, Helen (John) Loewen and Tina (Henry) Peters; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 brother and 4 sisters. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Tiffany in 1990, his son Isaak in 2014, and his daughter Anna in 2022. He was also predeceased by his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
We the family would like to thank the Staff at Tabor Home for the wonderful care that Dad received in the short time that he was there and for the care, compassion and generosity that was given to us as a family in his last two days. Thank you to all our friends and family for the prayers and support, they were very much felt. Thank you also to Art Wiebe and Wiebe’s Funeral Home for the support and for helping us navigate this difficult time.
