Jake attended school in Eigenhof (near Gretna) traveling by horse and buggy or walking. After the family relocated to Rudnerwiede, he attended the school in Rosenort. Jake was very proud of his good math skills, saying he had grade 5 twice which equalled grade 10. This was enough to take him through the entirety of his life.
Dad was always eager to learn new skills even in later years of life. At the age of 80, he managed to write his life's story on the computer. Jake met the love of his life, Annie Enns and they got married July 9th,1950. They were blessed with 7 daughters, always waiting for that son to come along but Dr. Wiebe said the sons will come later. They rented farm land until he bought his own farm northwest of Miami in 1961. Jake was very thankful for his daughters (his lovely bunch of coconuts) help on the farm, milking cows and working the farm machinery. He was always forgiving when we made mistakes even if they were costly. Sharing the Gospel in the form of music and singing was very important to Jake and as a family, we sang at many functions and senior homes and later we recorded 5 albums. It was important to him to take time and resources to help the less privileged and was involved in organizing fundraisers.
Jake and Ann farmed until 1990, when they retired and relocated to Morden. Jake continued his music ministry by forming groups to sing for the sick, elderly and prisoners. He found it very difficult when his health no longer allowed him to continue. Jake experienced many struggles in his last few years. He did not appreciate being moved, and the move to Salem Home was very difficult for him to accept. At the same time he would always say "I couldn't ask for better care. The staff here are all so good to us."
The family would like to thank all the Salem Home staff for the wonderful care given to dad. Thank you to pastor Jay for doing the service, to Glorybound, to the servers, ushers, the musicians, and to all the family and friends that took time to visit dad and thank you to Wiebe's funeral home for their great service.
