May 23, 1956 – April 25, 2026
On Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the age of 69, John (Zeke) Dyck of Stanley, MB was called home to be with the Lord.
John was born on May 23, 1956 in Winkler, MB to Cornelius and Anne Dyck. He was the middle child of 5, having 2 older sisters and two younger brothers. John grew up on the family farm in Blumenfeld where he acquired his love for farming. As a child, he attended school in the village of Blumenfeld, but he much preferred working on the farm than going to school. In John’s teen years they started C.J. Dyck + Sons. John obtained his class one drivers and started hauling gravel for the RM of Stanley.
John always had a competitive nature and loved playing sports, especially baseball and hockey. He played for the Winkler Royals where he received a hit to the face and suffered a split lip and the loss of his two front teeth. In later years, he continued to play hockey for fun on a “Farmers” league.
John was baptized upon the confession of his faith on June 6, 1982 by Bishop John A. Friesen at the Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church.
It was through mutual friends that John met Maryanne while cruising up and down the street of Hochfeld. They were married August 28, 1983. Their home for the first six months was in Morden, from there they moved to the farm across from Stanley Park. They moved to Winkler for a short time before moving back to the farm permanently.
In the fall of 1991, they welcomed their son Jonathan, followed by their daughter Stacey in 1994. John continued to expand the farm, dabbling in various farming endeavours including pigs, cattle, emus, and for a short time, sheep. Eventually he realized it was best if he just stuck to grain farming. Over the years he grew many different crops and often said that sunflowers built the farm.
As busy as the farm kept him, John still made time for fun. He loved camping and fishing with family and friends. Many weekends were spent at the lake where countless memories were made. He especially enjoyed pulling skiers on the water and was thrilled when a new skier succeeded. He was most proud when he was able to pull eight skiers behind his boat at one time and when the 3 girls succeeded in making a pyramid on skis – something he still loved talking about until his last days. In the winter John had extra time to take the family on weekend vacations and road trips out to the mountains to go downhill skiing. He spent many miles on the road sightseeing and tagging along to toy shows with friends. John also spent a few winters going on mission trips to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico and Africa which he thoroughly enjoyed.
His favourite people called him “grandpa”. He loved taking the grandkids for tractor and combine rides, as well as 4-wheeler and motorcycle rides to check crops or visit the neighbours. The girls were very good at convincing grandpa to buy them trinkets at MCC or to drive them to town for ice cream.
John is remembered by his wife of 42 years, Maryanne, his children, Jonathan (Kayla) and Stacey (Daniel), and his 4 grandkids, Cassie, Tessa, Owen and Emery. He was predeceased by his father, Cornelius J. Dyck in 2003, mother, Anne Dyck in 2016, father-in-law, Herman Heide in 2009, and brother-in-law, Herman Heide Jr. in 2018.
A special thank you to all who came to visit John in the hospital or at home, he truly appreciated the company. As well as to the doctors and staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre for the excellent care they provided. The Farmer’s Verse
To every thing there is a season,
And a time to every purpose under the heaven;
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted…
Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2
