John spent his younger years near Kronsgart and Plum Coulee. His family moved to the farm south of Elm Creek in 1943. John finished high school in 1948 at Elm Creek Collegiate. John remained on the farm working with his Father and his brother, Jake. He did explore other interests along the way including a Diesel and Automotive Engineering course in Edmonton in 1949, a two week bee keeping course in 1951 and was in the army reserves for a time in 1962.
John lived on the farm with his parents until 1984 when they retired to Winkler, MB. He had the house to himself for about three years which meant he often wore mismatched socks. That changed on April 25th, 1987 when John married Helen Thiessen of Miami, MB. Their wedding car was a one horse power vehicle. Helen’s brother, Jake, drove them in his horse and buggy. John’s father had his grandson, Dwayne, bring him sugar cubes to feed the horse.
Life on the farm was very busy with field work and taking care of cattle but there was also time to stock the pond with small fish such as rainbow trout in the spring and catch them for preserving in the fall. Also, the garden was very large and provided lots of fresh produce for the family as well as other friends and family.
John attended church his whole life until his health declined. He decided to be baptized at home on September 9th, 2017. Pastor Dale Warkentin was there to perform the baptism.
Some of John’s pass times were knitting which he did until very recently, playing Chinese checkers which he usually won and practising his math skills. Just for fun, John would correctly work out the square root of any number on paper filling up the whole page. John also liked to hear about science such as outer space. Every Saturday he would listen to a science show at noon on the radio.
John was always such a fun uncle. He spent time with his nieces and nephews playing games and making jokes. Everyone remembers him fondly for his good humour and positive nature.
John was predeceased by his parents, John P. and Anna, two sisters Leona and Annette, one brother Hubert (Margaret), parents in law John and Agenatha, brother in law Jake (Tina). John is survived by his wife Helen, brother Jake (Irene), brother-in-laws John (Elizabeth), Cornie (Margaret), sister-in-law Aganetha (Edward), and many nieces and nephews.
Thanks to Carman Memorial Hospital and Palliative Care. We appreciate the wonderful care John received.
