Joyce M. (Sand) Freund was born to Edmund and Irene (Plemel) Sand on December 11, 1940 at their home in Crocus, ND. While they lived in Crocus she attended a country school until they moved to Cando in 1951. She then attended school at Cando Public School and graduated with the Class of 1958. After graduation she met the love of her life, John (Jack) Freund, and they married on June 7, 1960 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They moved to the farm 5 miles north of Cando and enjoyed raising their 5 children on the only place that they would ever live after they married.
Joyce had many jobs throughout her years. First, she loved being a wife and mom to her family. After that she became a housekeeper at the hospital, CNA at the nursing home, personal caregiver and a housekeeper at the Sportsman Motel. If she wasn’t working, she was singing. She participated in church choir, community choir, song leading at church, and had a trio that liked to sing for people. Jack would play and Joyce would sing. There was never a day that you would not hear her singing while cleaning or doing things in her yard. Another past time she enjoyed was bowling in league. She loved bowling with her family and friends in Mixed League, Women’s League, and Coffee Cup League. But her favorite thing to do was to spend all her time riding her lawnmower. Joyce and Jack would spend hours outside together making the farm beautiful. After Jack passed, she took great pride in keeping up the yard and taking care of her animals: 1 horse, 1 dog, 20 cats, and 7 skunks. The farm is her families favorite place to come and visit. She also loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She loved going to all their sporting events, musical events, and to be a part of big moments in their lives. She had a zest for life and loved to tell stories. She made people laugh and had a silly sense of humor. She always could make you smile. She was a light of happiness in all of her children’s lives.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 sisters, 3 brothers, and a great-grandchild.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren: Pat Freund (Alliana and Sean), Tim (Barb) Freund (Kayla (Paul) Teeple, Tyler, and Britney), Natalie (Richard) Dickson (Tori, Travis, Tonya, and Tate), Melissa (Brad) Westphal (Jonathon (Angie), Anthony, and Erica) and Michelle (Matthew) Neumann (Mackenzie, Mitchel (Ronna), Melisa, and Marcus), 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
