John was born in 1942 in Winkler to William and Mary Enns and was the oldest of six siblings. Dad grew up in Schanzenfeld, working on the family farm and playing baseball. Schanzenfed was a place he never wanted to leave.
After marrying his Queen Leona in 1963 they attempted to leave Schanzenfeld, where he used his Harvard degree working as a manager of the Irish Potato Chip factory in Winnipeg. While living in Winnipeg, farming remained his passion and when they were able, moved back home to farm and start a family. Dad loved the years spent working on the dairy together with his wife, brothers, children, nieces and nephews. These were some of the best years and memories together as a family. He always said he didn't work a day in his life. Dad's hobbies consisted of coffee drinking, visiting and reading Russian literature. In his younger years dad played a lot of baseball which led him to meeting his bride. He frequently reminded his family that he would have been an MLB player if not for a shoulder injury. Dad loved music. He could play the same song on harmonica, accordion, guitar and piano.
Dad enjoyed the social aspect of fishing and traveling. Although he always wondered why one would leave when they have it so good at home. Dad can be found in many traveling pictures with random strangers. He would often comment about the friendly people he met along the way. He was not self conscious. When mom asked if he ever got embarrassed he replied "I don't know what that means" as he considered everyone his friend.
Our most cherished memory of dad is seeing him read his Bible. He spent countless hours in the feed room calculating feed rations and moisture of alfalfa while preparing Sunday school lessons and sermons. His Bible was greasy and duct taped. The imagery of our Father in heaven is an image our dad portrayed to us. He was quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
