Kenia was a courageous and perseverant woman as she moved through many countries on her search for peace, freedom, and better opportunities for her boys. She and Carlos and Christian arrived in Mexico in the summer of 2020, receiving refugee status and sanctuary. In August, 2022, they arrived in Canada. After settling in her apartment north of town and enrolling the boys in high school, she began a journey of learning Winkler culture and English, and worked in the onion department at Kroeker Farms.
Kenia was shy to speak English and conversations were often punctuated with her quick giggle, a hand to her face, or an outburst of laughter. Even after her rounds of chemo, she attended a few English classes, determined to learn the language. With my broken Spanish and her broken English, we often got ourselves into tricky situations which ended with grace and laughter each time.
In April of 2023 she called 911 when she felt she was having a heart attached. This resulted in many tests - confirming a diagnosis of Lymphoma.
Kenia was determined to beat this cancer, as she had already overcome so many battles throughout her life. During the following months in and out of appointments and hospitals, she relied on her new friends to help her navigate the healthcare system. While she was rarely able to communicate her questions and concerns, she always extended grace and patience to those around her.
As her health deteriorated, she filled her home with songs of praise to the God who sustained her. Her faith was strong and she requested to be baptised in preparation for her entry to heaven. It was important to her that she had the outward symbol of a clean heart. As she was never married, she asked to enter heaven's gates in a white dress surrounded by the colorful roses she loved so much. Once Kenia received a large print Bible that she could finally read, she didn't want to put it down. Kenia recently worked through a personal study of the book of Revelation. We found her in deep discussion one day about the things of Heaven and the end times.
Throughout her time in Manitoba, Kenia has been a teacher. She has taught me grace, loyal trust, perspective, and priorities. She opened her arms and her home to me and my children. She became vulnerable. She asked for help from strangers. She so graciously allowed us to walk alongside her.
We are forever changed because of our short time with a beautiful soul.
Kenia was born on January 19, 1984 in Honduras. She was predeceased by both her parents and her siblings. She leaves to mourn her passing here in Manitoba, her sons Carlos and Christian. In Honduras, she leaves her daughter Karla and Karla’s
three children.
Rest well, dance in glory with your new body, enjoy the roses, and we will see you later.
