
Leila was born July 13, 1954 in Cavalier, the daughter of the late Bennie & Ann (Rasmussen) Hunter. Leila was the 9th out of 11 kids and she adored her siblings and being a little sister. She attended school in Hoople/Crystal area and graduated from Valley High School in 1972. She went on to attend Josef’s School of Hair Design in Grand Forks. Upon her graduation she moved back to Crystal and worked at Ev’s Beauty Shop. She married Loren Gullickson in 1973 and they had four great children. She worked as a bookkeeper for Valley Implement and Lyla’s Cafe for a short time before starting work at Motor Coach Industries in Pembina until her retirement in 2016.
Leila was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Hoople where she worked in the kitchen every year at the church supper and helped with Bible School when her children were young. She enjoyed keeping tabs on her 8 grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to babysit or help out with the kids. She kept busy with her hobbies of sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and working in her yard.
She is survived by her children: Laurie (Dennis) Lee Evansville, MN; Andy (Sara), Hoople, ND; Tom (Kristi), Hoople, ND; Joe (Jenna), Hoople, ND; 8 Grandchildren; siblings: sister Carol (Paul) O’Keefe, Crystal, ND; brother Ray, Grand Forks, ND; sister-in-law Virginia, Cheyenne, WY; brother Jerry (Deb) Grand Forks, ND; brother Tom Devils Lake, ND; brother Paul (Becky) Mesa, AZ; brother Don, Helena, MT and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers George, Jim, Teddy and Lloyd and sister-in-law Marabeth.
A memorial service will be Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the First Lutheran Church of Hoople. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the church. Friends may also call at the church for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at the Crystal Memorial Cemetery in the spring. Social distancing guidelines will be followed and masks are required. Memorials are preferred to the Hoople Fire Department, the Crystal Fire Department or the Hoople Swimming Pool. The memorial service will be livestreamed on the First Lutheran Church of Hoople Facebook page.
