After a brief illness, Lil died on March 18th, 2022 at the Carman Memorial Hospital. Lil received the news in 2020 that she had colon cancer. She was fortunate to have the tumor removed with surgery. However, not even a year later, it metastasized to Liver Cancer for which she received chemotherapy treatments. Unfortunately, Lil received the unsettling news in January of this year that she had two brain tumors. The only saving grace was that she did not endure any pain throughout her cancer journey.
She is survived by her son Rick, and daughter in law, Sandra, her two grandchildren, Dane and Breanna, each who held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her sister, Eileen Hampson (Brian), sisters and brother in laws, Evelyn and Henry Rose, Edith Parker, Dianne and Stan Ferris, Charlotte and Gordon Dyck, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and relatives throughout Canada, US and Denmark.
Lil’s husband Alvin, passed away on December 4th, 2007 and she was also predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary Nurnberg, her brothers Ronald and Allan and Alvin's parents, Adolf and Mary, sister in-law Sandy Murner and her brother in-laws, Wally Murner and Wright Parker.
Lil's birth was earlier than expected. Her parents were cutting wood along the Brokenhead River in Manitoba when their truck went off the icy road and the impact put her mom Mary, who was seven months pregnant, into labor. Lil was delivered with the help of an Indigenous woman, who lived nearby. Lil was very tiny and was placed in a shoebox, and put on the open door of the wood stove to keep her warm. When Lil’s grandfather heard of her birth, he made arrangements for her and her mom to be taken into a hospital in Winnipeg. Lil's tenacity was present at this young age. She was thriving, and after a few months in the hospital, she finally met her older brother, Ronald, who was staying with relatives in Clarkleigh, Manitoba. The family moved to a farm north of Sanford shortly after her birth. A year later, another brother, Allan, arrived, however she was happiest when her sister, Eileen, arrived in 1946. All of her schooling was in Sanford. She excelled at running, baseball, curling, skating and protecting her brothers.
The King family was large. Her mom Mary was the oldest of eleven children, Lil grew up close to her aunts, uncles and numerous cousins and remained in close contact until she became ill. At the time of her passing, Lil was the eldest of the remaining cousins.
In the mid 1950's, Lil began her career as a hair stylist and shortly after, met a dashing young man, Alvin Murner, who worked at the Sanford's auto body shop. As he cruised down the road where Lil was walking, he tried to convince her to go for a drive. Lil had very high principles and took off running, leaving him in the dust. Gradually she softened and Alvin's '51 Meteor, with pom poms dancing in all the windows and a Hawaiian doll dancing on the dash, would frequent the Nurnberg driveway. When Alvin and Lil started talking about marriage, Lil saved every cent and Alvin went to work on the DEW line in northern Canada to make sure they had a healthy bank account. Alvin returned and began his career with the Winnipeg fire department in September 1957. A year later they were married in Sanford United church on August 16, 1958.
With their son Rick's arrival in December 19th, 1960, their trailer home was soon bursting at the seams, necessitating a move out of their trailer. Eventually they built a new home in Sanford. Their lives were busy, as Rick grew and became involved in all sorts of activities, driving many miles to triathlons, bike races, motorcycle races and hockey games. They were very active parents. When Rick and Sandra married, and had children, Lil doted on the grandchildren, always willing to drop whatever and attend to many the kids sporting events, not to mention babysitting, giving Rick and Sandra a 'night out'.
Lil enjoyed "her ladies" who came to her beauty salon. Lil was proficient at using the ‘Cold Wave’ technique that women loved. Her career spanned into the 1990's and her 'ladies' became lifelong friends.
Lil loved to travel and visited many Canadian provinces, US states and European countries. In 1991, Lil and Eileen flew to Denmark to visit their brother, Allan and his boys, Andy and Glenn Peter, and to meet the Danish relatives. It was surreal, being in a room full of relatives, but not speaking the same language. The language of the Heart prevailed and many subsequent trips followed, one time showing Dane and Breanna the country of their maternal great grandfather.
After Lil retired, she enjoyed driving other Sanford ladies to lunches and various activities, always providing door to door service. In 2021, she was recognized by the RM of MacDonald where she was presented with a Volunteer Award for her service to others in the community.
This is only a glimpse of Lil's early years and there are probably other stories that each of you have of your own. Cherish those memories, hold them in your hearts and tell them to future generations.
Lil will remain forever in our hearts. Rest In Peace.
