Loren was born on July 11, 1965, in Devils Lake, ND to the late Lorraine and Melvin GreyBear, Sr. He was raised on the Spirit Lake Reservation, he also stayed in Poplar, M.T. for a short period of time. He married Isabel Cavanaugh and had five children. He was later divorced and met Lori Alberts and had one daughter.
He attended Four Winds High School and graduated in 1983. He attended college at Minot State University. Later he attended Cankdeska Cikana Community College where he was studying Liberal Arts and Dakota Studies. He received two certificates of Excellence in Dakota Thought and Philosophy and for Most Improved in Dakota Language 2.
Throughout his life, Loren worked at Sioux Manufacturing Corporation, Dakota Tribal Industries, the Spirit Lake Tribal Security program, and the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort. He Is known for his intelligence and strong work ethic; he was also a fluent speaker of Dakota.
Loren’s greatest joy was his family. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was close to his first cousins in Montana, he referred to them as his sisters (Kelly, Andrea, and the late Laurie.) He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and was a beloved friend to many. He was great company to have around and always made sure everyone would be smiling and laughing. He was known to be a “goofball.”
He is survived by his brothers, Melvin GreyBear Jr, Bentley (Melissa) GreyBear Sr, and Myron GreyBear Sr. His children Loren (Lucy) GreyBear Jr, Lyle GreyBear, Dedrick GreyBear, Lorenda GreyBear, and Dancia GreyBear. His grandchildren, Aaliyah, Kameron, Thomas, Samual, Kenyon, Tylin, Kasey Jewel, Jayden, Lucas, Amaria, and Kassie. Special niece’s, Areonna GreyBear, Cante Skuya GreyBear (Adopted Sister), and Samantha GreyBear. Special nephew Lyndon GreyBear Sr. Special Cousins, Jeannie Cavanaugh and Luwona Cavanaugh, and many more nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Loren is welcomed home by his grandparents, Michael and Rosalie (Littlewind) Thomas, Abraham GreyBear and Lottie (Old Rock) GreyBear-Brown. His parents, Melvin and Lorriane (Thomas) GreyBear. His sister’s Colette GreyBear and Jewel (GreyBear) Tuttle. His son, Galen GreyBear.

Procession will leave at 4:00PM City Plaza parking lot. The wake for Loren will be held on Monday September 9th, 2024, at the Crowhill Recreation Center beginning at 5:00PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services for Loren will be held on Tuesday September 10th at 10:00AM at the Crowhill Recreation Center. He will be laid to rest beside his parents at St. Jerome’s Cemetery, rural Fort Totten.
