Education was important to the family and Lyall and his siblings all completed Grade 12. He attended Anderson, Roland and Carman Schools. Lyall married Lois Edie in 1957. They were married for 63 years until her death in 2021. They enjoyed spending time together and were seldom apart. They met Square Dancing and danced together in several local clubs for 60 years.
Lyall and Lois had 5 daughters. He was very proud of his girls and was known to say, he had 5 daughters who each had at least one university degree. He was a very involved father, showing up to watch any activity we were in, helping with homework and 4-H projects and driving us everywhere we wanted to be.
Lyall loved children. His enjoyment when he was with babies and young children was evident. He was a natural teacher and enjoyed teaching anytime he could. His daughters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews all benefited from this.
He fixed and built many items. He did most of his own repair work around the farm and house. He was a certified welder but also served as a carpenter, a plumber, a mechanic, an electrician and any things else that was needed. He derived great satisfaction from making something work again or from modifying something, so it worked better. His strong physical strength often showed when he was fixing things. Lyall enjoyed working with and training animals.
Lyall was involved in the community in many ways. He served on Roland Municipal Council for 9 years. He belonged to the Presbyterian Church and later the United Church. He served on several church committees and did more work behind the scenes. He believed in supporting local businesses and did his shopping and business as close to Roland as possible. As 2 of Lyall and Lois’ daughters became involved in an international agricultural exchange program, they became involved with the program hosting trainees from several countries, some of whom they later visited on their travels.
Lyall and Lois loved their camping van and before it their converted bus. They put on many miles, traveling as far as Alaska and Pheonix but also using it to visit family and friends closer to home.
