Mary was born in Freeport, MN on May 13, 1942, daughter of Henry and Olivia (Pohlman) Koopmeiners. She was raised in Melrose, MN and went to Saint Boniface School. After only one year of high school, she helped her dad in cleaning St. Mary’s Church, was a nanny for a time and later worked at the dry cleaners.
Mary met her husband-to-be (Eugene) at her brother’s wedding to Eugene’s cousin. They were married Wednesday, September 28, 1960 at 9:30 a.m. in the morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. They lived on a farm northeast of Calio and raised their four children. Mary learned how to drive a car, tractor, and helped with the farm chores. At harvest time, Mary was the grain hauler to town or home. After helping the kids with homework, Mary got her G.E.D. from Devils Lake Regional College on May 22, 1986, in about 3 months!

She worked at Munich Café, Helen’s Bar in Clyde, and managed the Munich Bar for a couple of months. She did the rural mail route for 3 years, helped clean the Munich Public School for 1 season, and took up the 1990 census in our area. She was the township assessor and for 5 years had 4 townships to assess. Mary was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, a member of St. Mary’s Alter Society and Clyde Homemakers.
Mary started making cakes for the kid’s birthdays, which led to a business of baking and decorating many cakes for weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays! Her cakes were a work of love and were always the moistest cakes! She crocheted and knitted and made some amazing Afghans and sweaters! She also cross-stitched, embroidered, made lots of things with plastic canvas, and did Artex painting! She enjoyed bowling, dancing, and card games as well. Mary was an awesome cook and bread baker, making the best homemade pizza and raspberry malts around!
