(nee Dyck)
November 1, 1929 - October 20, 2025
Mary Miller Nee Dyck was born in her home on November 1, 1929, in Friedensruh to Isaac and Mary Dyck. Mary was the second oldest of 14 kids. She loved school, but that was cut short at age 13 as she had to stay home and look after her younger siblings.
She was a very hard worker and at the age of 6 she was already milking cows! Her first job was working for AA Kroeker where she sewed and stitched potato bags together and helped cut up potatoes for seed, she went with her family hoeing the fields. She also worked in Walhalla U.S.A picking potatoes making $5 a day. She worked as a housekeeper for local residents in Winkler and also at the local hotel. She also worked as a maid in Darlingford.
She met the love of her life at age 20, Matthew Miller, while cruising and liked his model T car. They got married on September 30, 1951, and moved to Winnipeg shortly after that. She worked for a Doctor's wife as a maid there. She also got a Job at Eaton's wrapping catalogs and making grocery orders. She also worked at a dry cleaner on Sergeant Ave.
In 1954, a baby girl, Irene Marie was born. In 1956, daughter number 2, Joan Dale was born and 1958, Connie Diane was born in a winter storm. In 1960, Matthew lost his eyesight. Life changed for them after this. In 1962, another girl, Grace was born. While Mary was still in the hospital in Winnipeg, Matt was starting to move the family to their new home on a farm in Miami Manitoba. Life on the farm was hard!
Together, Mary and Matthew and Matt’s dad built a hip roof barn. They raised cows, pigs, chickens, geese, pigeons and ducks. Shooting skunks and squirrels with her 22 rifle and was a good shot. The farm life only lasted six years until Matthew had a severe heart attack. This meant another move for the family, to Crystal Crescent in Winkler. In 1968, blessing number 5, Audrey Lee was born. Seven months later, Mary went to work at the Gladstone lunch bar and eventually to the meat counter.
She worked there for 25 years until 1989 when she retired. She also went door-to-door selling studio girl makeup.
Mary loved to garden, her garden was massive and she blessed many people with the fruits of her labour. You could still find her in the garden until this past year. She loved to can pickles, beets, salsa, pizza sauce and many more. Mary was an amazing cook; she would often have the entire family all at once over for a meal and STILL have leftovers for the neighbours. She was also a talented painter and loved to draw, she also did cross-stitch. She loved to be silly and goofy with her family.
Mary's first love was the Lord Jesus, and would often share her testimony and experiences to all who would hear. Her faith was so important to her, she often said she wanted to see ALL her family in heaven and prayed for them daily. Since being in the Hospital, her Boldness for Jesus greatly increased. She would make sure anyone that entered her room knew about Jesus.
After 5 long weeks in the hospital on October 20 with Grace and Audrey by her side, she smiled and took her last breath.
Mary leaves to mourn her five daughters, Irene, Joan (Walter Redekopp), Connie (David Sukkau), Grace (Orlando Sukkau), Audrey (Greg Friesen), 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Matthew Miller, one grandson Travis Sukkau and 8 siblings.
