Nicholas George Link was born September 4, 1949 in Watertown, South Dakota, the son of the late Edward and Alice (Brown) Link. Nick grew up in Watertown and attended Immaculate Conception School through his freshman year. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1968. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in July, 1968, he served in Vietnam and Virginia. Later he spent several years as an Army Reservist.
While still in the Army, he began taking college courses at the University of Virginia. He graduated from Northern State College, Aberdeen, SD, in 1976, and taught high school English for several years in North and South Dakota.
In 1982, he started working at the Developmental Center in Grafton. On December 16, 1983, he was united in marriage to Diane Karr in Grafton, ND. They made their home and raised their family in Grafton. In 1988, he began working part-time as a dispatcher for the Grafton Police Department and in 1996, he started working as a 911 dispatcher for Walsh County. He was a member of the Apostolic Faith Church in Grafton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, collecting coins and military memorabilia, reading, writing and listening to music. He was active in his church and in the 19th Engineer Battalion Association.
Nick is survived by his wife, Diane Link, Grafton, ND; his children: Patrick (Carolyn) Karr, West Fargo, ND; Jeremy Karr, Milliken, CO; Jennifer Karr, Sacramento, CA; his grandchildren: Christopher, Andrew, Logan, Caylee, Emilee, Jonathan and Megan; his sister, Nona (Dale) Hale, Santa Monica, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Geraldine (Carl) Upchurch.
Memorial services will be Friday, July 12, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at the Apostolic Faith Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post 41 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
Everyone who remembers Nick is asked to celebrate his life in their own way. Instead of flowers, Nick would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone else in his name.
