Patricia Margaret Klassen (nee McDermott)
1951 - 2022It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia M. Klassen (Patti) in Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday November 9, 2022.
Patti was born in Dundee, Scotland on May 9, 1951. Wanting greater opportunities for their children, the family emigrated to Canada in 1957. They settled in a small gold mining town called Schumacher, Ontario and in 1964 moved to Windsor where she resided until the completion of high school and college. She moved to Vancouver for a short time and while driving back to Ontario, she stopped to visit a friend in Winnipeg. She enjoyed it there so much that she remained here for the rest of her life. Patti really enjoyed many things; among them was being a lifeguard, curling, darts, skating, swimming, biking, reading, loving her Lord, visiting her friends and family, eating out, watching Frasier on TV, sunny days, crossword puzzles, rock ’n roll music and Trivial Pursuit. Her vacations took her to Cuba, Mexico, Texas and Osoyoos, BC but her best times were travelling back to Windsor to visit her family. Patti worked in the hospitality industry for a short while and then for many years with the provincial government Student Aid branch. No matter where life took her, she made friends easily. Then at the age of 49, a major cardiac arrest changed her life forever. Her chance of surviving this was very bleak but after about six months in the hospital, she was discharged and went home to be cared for by her loving husband for the rest of her life.
Patti is survived by her loving husband, Richard, her sisters, Maureen (Frank) of Hope, BC, Audrey (Tello) of Windsor, ON, her niece and numerous nephews. Also left to mourn her passing are Richard’s sisters, Gloria (Howard) of Winkler, MB and Helen (George) of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Letitia McDermott, one brother, Alan, brothers-in-law, Dr. Leonard Klassen and Herb Dyck, whom Patti was especially fond of.
Richard would like to thank the many home care workers who assisted Patti over the years and Dr. Raymond Singer for being Patti’s family physician for over 40 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Patti’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
