Alan was born on June 4, 1938, in Bowsman, MB. He grew up on a farm with his large family. He worked at a variety of jobs across Manitoba before attending the University of Winnipeg and obtaining a Bachelor of Theology. He met Mary at university, and they wed in 1971.
Alan was a respected clergy with the United Church of Canada for over 50 years. He served many pastoral charges across the prairie provinces, primarily in Manitoba. Alan obtained his Master of Divinity from the University of Winnipeg and practiced intentional interim ministry for the last several years of his professional working life. Alan touched the lives of many people with his humor, kindness and incredible capacity for love.
After his retirement, Alan continued to perform marriages, baptisms, funeral services and pastoral support for another 25 years. Alan and Mary moved to Carman from Winnipeg in 2005. Alan enjoyed gardening, his many houseplants and baking his famous bread. He enjoyed being a husband, father and grandfather.
Alan passed away peacefully at his home in Carman, MB on June 10, 2025. He is survived by his son Paul (Mary-Jayne), daughter Anne Freitas (Peter) and two grandchildren Mark and Persephone. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Kines of Birtle, MB and many nieces and nephews.
Although we will miss him greatly and are deeply saddened by this sudden loss, we know that he would want us to continue to embrace life and live in laughter.
At Alan’s request there will be no service. If friends wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada in Alan’s memory.
