Stuart’s early years were shaped in La Riviere, Manitoba, where his adventures and stories began. He cherished memories of finding snapping turtles, picking saskatoons, and the lighthearted shenanigans shared with friends like Ernie Cavers and Dale Brown. In 1960, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force with dreams of seeing the world, though he ultimately served at Gimli and trained in radar equipment maintenance.
After leaving the Air Force, Stuart began a long career with Transport Canada at Winnipeg International Airport, where he worked until retirement. He was instrumental in computerizing radar equipment in the 1970s, a testament to his intelligence and forward-thinking approach. Following retirement from his first career, he spent ten years with Arnold Bros., bringing his steady work ethic and kindness to a new chapter.
Stuart lived in Winnipeg but cherished the family cottage in La Riviere at the Holiday Mountain compound, where he found true happiness every weekend. He was deeply involved in ski racing in Manitoba, serving as a board member for Manitoba Alpine for many years and earning a reputation as a highly respected race official. His warmth, humour, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who met him.
He was a devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Henny, and a loving father to three children: Sherri, Karen (Gar), and Trevor. He cherished his granddaughters, Kayla and Cierra (Caleb). Stuart had siblings Betty (Albert) Wiklund, Helen (Brofie) Klassen, and Glen (Alice) Fleck and brother-in-law John Bouma and Jack (Donna Bouma) and numerous nieces and nephews who fondly called him their favorite uncle.
Stuart enjoyed skiing, golfing, riding his bike through Assiniboine Park, photography, canoeing, and walking his dog. He lived a life of quiet kindness, intelligence, and a humor that could brighten any room. He made a lasting memory with everyone he met.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Stuart’s life and the many ways he touched those around him. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Deer Lodge Centre for their compassionate care.
