After a diagnosis of ALS in September 2022, he showed undeniable strength and courage in fighting the disease. After a time it became more and more of a struggle but with God’s help and the blessing of a wonderful, supportive wife, he was able to stay at home through most of his journey.
In the hopes of finding more effective pain management, Bill was admitted to Boundary Trails Health Center on Thursday June 13, 2024. After two nights at the hospital, he became totally pain-free in the arms of Jesus at 3:36 pm on June 15, 2024.

Bill was an honest hard-working Christian man who didn’t like conflict. He was a willing volunteer and gave his all in everything he did. He spent many years as a member of the board of Co-op and at the Threshermen’s Museum in Winkler. His service on the Bergthaler Church missions committee was very important to him, he was glad to help and be of service in any way he could. The disease began to show it’s effect in the last years. Picking up the potatoes for the fall supper, a job that was always easy in the past, he now needed help to load and unload potatoes as his arm strength was leaving him. Bill was also asked to let his name stand for deacon at the church, but his voice control was also declining so he could not say yes.
Many years were spent growing vegetables for the MCC Auction as he loved to garden and share with others. Bill was a carpenter/farmer by trade. He built many homes by hand with a hammer and nails. Not many could drive a nail faster than him!
He will be greatly missed but we will meet again one day heaven.
We would like to thank everyone who helped Bill to be as comfortable as possible! Thank you to family and friends, the local palliative care team, home care, Boundary Trails staff and doctors, the ALS team and the staff at Deer Lodge hospital in Winnipeg.
A special thanks to Pastor Victor for his visits, to John and Sally Letkeman for their surprise basket and visit he was still able to enjoy, and to Henry Neufeld for his visit and prayers.
