Winten A. Gunderson was born November 20, 1925 in Esmond, North Dakota, the son of the late Asle and Ida (Erickson) Gunderson. He was baptized and confirmed at Esmond Trinity Lutheran Church. He graduated from Esmond High School in 1943 and was drafted into service of the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion for World War II. He served in the Pacific at Gamadodo, New Guinea and the invasion of Luzon, Philippine Islands. Where upon he was awarded the Battle Star. Winten returned to civilian life in February 1946. He immediately enrolled into Mayville College, Mayville, ND. He was the superintendent and teacher in Fairdale, ND. He was employed with Polar Communication for 35 years and the last 16 years he was the manager and CEO of Polar until he retired in 1990. Winten was united in marriage to Helen June Groven in Grafton, ND on May 29, 1948, they were married for 63 years until her death on March 5, 2011. Winten was united in marriage to Adeline Hurtt on March 20, 2012 until her death on October 14, 2020.
He was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church, a Sunday school teacher, served on the Grafton School Board and many boards and committees. He was a Veteran of World War II and a member of the Grafton American Legion Post #41.
Winten is survived by his children: Timothy (Peggy) Gunderson, Grand Forks, ND; Wendy (Paul) Bina, Grafton, ND; Jill (David) Bosanco, Grafton, ND; step-daughters: Carol Stanger, Sharon Lynch, Gay Ann Colliton; nine grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one on the way and three great great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen June, infant son James Allen, second wife Adeline, parents, two brothers and four sisters. He was the last surviving member of the Gunderson family.
Winten was a man of great faith and he knew personally that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior.
Memorial services will be Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grafton Lutheran Church of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Hospice of the Red River Valley or a charity of donor’s choosing.
