Sharlene "Shar" Anderson, 69, of Devils Lake, North Dakota, passed away on April 17, 2023, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, surrounded by her two daughters and the thoughts and prayers of many loved ones. She was born in New Rockford, North Dakota, as the first child of Robert and Alerene (Nelson) Hoffman on September 11, 1953. She grew up in the New Rockford/Sheyenne area with her four siblings, working on the family farm and having fun with cousins and friends. She attended New Rockford High School (class of 1971), where she developed lifelong friendships. Shar attended Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake, ND, where she studied nursing. After graduating she moved to Fargo, ND and worked for Saint Luke's Hospital as a nurse. Shar was introduced to Richard "Rick" Anderson by her father and they were united in marriage on May 15, 1976 in New Rockford, ND. In 1977 they moved to Devils Lake, ND where they lived, worked, and raised their two daughters Shannon and Heidi. Shar continued her 38 year nursing career at Mercy Hospital retiring in 2015. When Shar wasn't busy with work she enjoyed creating new crafts, gardening, bowling and golfing with friends, and a good Hallmark movie. Shar loved spending time with her family and cherished every moment. Shar is survived by her daughters Shannon and her husband Joe Ebsen, Plymouth, MN and Heidi Anderson, Eagan, MN; Brother Bob (Sandi) Hoffman, New Rockford and Lester (Kimiko) Hoffman, Broomfield, CO; sisters Penny (Steve) Eidem, Greeley, CO and Deb Hoffman, Evans, CO; sister-in-law Linda (Phil) Schmaltz, Devils Lake and Lois Drumwright, Pascola, MO; brothers-in-law Terry Fauts, Big Lakes, AK and many dear nieces, nephews and their families. Donald Wayne Murray was born April 1, 1955, to Robert and Frances (McEwen) Murray in Altona, Manitoba. Donny was proud of his dual citizenship. Donny attended and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1973. He furthered his education at NDSCS studying to be a mechanic. Donny often spoke about at an early age how he would work for area farmers. He like his dad could fix or operate any equipment of any kind, which he passed on to his son Joe. He had a passion for the land and what it could produce. Donny attended the Cavalier Baptist Church. In June of 1976 Donny married Kathryn Sargent. Donny adopted Angel and Jason, and together they had Joseph Robert in May 1977. On February 14, 2009, Donny married Michelle Hardy. This past year they celebrated their golden anniversary, 14 years on the 14th. Donny worked for and managed Murray Bean Plant and other bean plants in different areas. He then worked for Hamilton Systems for 17 years, retiring in 2021. Donny spent his retirement working with Joe in the cattle, farming, and enjoying time with family. Fishing with Joe and the grandkids on Father’s Day, or with Diane and Ron in the boat or on the ice was something Donny enjoyed so very much. Survivors include his wife, Michelle; son, Joe (Steph); daughter, Angel; grandchildren: Lexi (Cody), Joey, Devi, Jaxon, Dylan, and Brooklyn; sisters: Kathy (Bruce) Redanbaugh, Diane (Ron) Schillinger, Judy (Jim) Maurer, and Patty (Mike) Ahern; brother and sisters-in-law: Gary (Faye) Hardy, Joe (Norine) Hardy, John (Becky) Hardy, Todd Hardy, Brenda (Bob) Mitzel, and Rita (Brian) Visser, and several nieces and nephews. Grant, 62 of Wahpeton formerly of Devils Lake ND passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Essentia Medical Center in Fargo. Michael Alan Grant was born 9/21/1960 in Belcourt, ND to William Vincent Grant and Elsie Grant. Mike was a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and was proud of his native heritage. He attended school in Devils Lake, ND and graduated in 1978 from Central High School. Mike attended NDSCS and earned a degree in Sheet Metal Fabrication and Heating and Cooling. On May 7, 1982 he married his childhood sweetheart, Gail LaMotte, in Wahpeton, ND. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters Amber Diana and Bethany Marie and two handsome grandsons Avery and Ethan Schlueter. Mike was employed at Circle of Nations school for nearly thirty years and left a legacy with his work. He cared deeply about the preservation of native traditions. He was a gifted craftsman and built frames, custom furniture pieces, little free libraries, shelves and star-quilt holders. As a friend, father, and husband, Mike was a storyteller with an uncanny sense of humor. For those lucky enough to know him, Mike always offered an open door with a cold one waiting. Many have shared memories by the pool table, camp fire, horseshoe pits, playing darts, or playing slots at the Casino. Mike was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Blackhawks and spent many nights enjoying UND hockey games with friends and family. Mike is survived by his wife Gail LaMotte Grant, daughters Amber (Grant) Schlueter and Bethany Grant (Moses Quinn Jr.), grandchildren Avery and Ethan Schlueter, his sister Theresa Grant, mother-in-law Diane Schell, father-in-law Orly Kjelshus (Lorraine), sisters-in-law Debby (Layton) Foltyn and Lisa (Mike) Larson, brothers-in-law David LaMotte, Bucky Kjelshus, Chris Kjelshus, his Springer Spaniel Sophie, and many relatives, nieces/nephews, close neighbors, and special friends. Kathryn (Kathy) Louise Gillis (nee McLeod) 1959 ~ 2023 With gratitude for having her in our lives, the family announces the peaceful death of our mother, sister, wife, and Amma, Kathryn Louise Gillis on Sunday, April 16, 2023. Kathy had a lengthy battle with cancer but it never stopped her from living life to the fullest. Kathy was born June 16, 1959 in Beausejour, Manitoba, the third daughter born to Alick and Nancy (nee Fraser) McLeod. The family grew and Kathy had 4 siblings who all survive her: Janice Wiebe (Wayne), Tracy Fehr (Ed), Scott McLeod (Darlene) and Leslie Malkowich. Her siblings all called her Kat, a nickname that was started by her father. She became much loved Aunty Kat to her 5 nephews and 4 nieces and their families. As Kathy grew up her family moved around the province. She Lived in Lac du Bonnet, Churchill, Winnipeg and Morden. After marrying Miles (July 31, 1983) she moved to the 1-6 Icelandic community south of Morden. She loved her neighbours and friends in the district. She learned to make vinarterta and ponnukokur. She loved the Icelandic traditions and birthday coffees. Kathy was very proud of her Scottish roots, though she didn’t like the haggis Tracy made for a family dinner and could not be convinced to try a sip of Scottish whiskey. Kathy Graduated in 1980 as a Registered Nurse from Misericordia Hospital and pursued her nursing career at Morden Hospital, Boundary Trails Health centre, then Tabor Home where she worked until March of 2023. She impacted the lives of many and developed numerous lifelong friendships over these years. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Miles Gillis, son, Evan Gillis, daughter, Shannon Maloney (Rick) and daughter, Eryn Zelcer (Eric). She was Amma to four dearly loved grandchildren: Olivia Gillis, Blake Maloney, Brooks Maloney and Bea Zelcer. She is also survived by sister-in-law. Robin Gillis. She was predeceased by her father, Alick (d. 1994), her mother, Nancy (d.1997), her mother-in-law, Leona (d.2005) and her father-in-law, John (d. 2011). Glen Charles Hildebrand 1971 ~ 2023 On Sunday April 16, 2023 Glen Hildebrand of Winkler, MB was called home to be with his Heavenly Father at the age of 52. After a strong fight with brain cancer, Glen passed away peacefully at BTHC. Glen was born on February 4,1971 in Winkler, MB. He grew up in Greenfarm in a Christian home where he helped on the farm and enjoyed spending time riding his dirt bike. Glen started dating Nellie in early 2001 and chose her to be his life companion. They were married on July 26, 2002 and were blessed with two children, Justin and Samara. Glen gave his life to the Lord Jesus at an early age and was baptized on April 7, 2002 at WMBC. He lived out his faith by starting each day in prayer and taught his family the importance of reading the Bible and going to church. Glen was dedicated to his job at Hometown Ford for the past 25 years. He served many customers with his considerate and common-sense approach. He appreciated that his workplace was so close to home so that he could bike to and from work and be home with his family for mealtimes. Glen enjoyed the outdoors and loved to ride motorcycles in summer and often headed to the outdoor rink to play hockey in the winter months. He was dedicated to his family and loved spending time together camping, going on vacations, and playing sports with Justin and Samara. Glen will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his wife, Nellie, son, Justin and daughter, Samara. Urlaub, 91, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022, at the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla. Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla. Leonard E. Urlaub was born in the Langdon-Osnabrock area at the farm home of his parents, George & Blanche (Beauchamp) Urlaub. The family moved to Leyden and later near Svold. He attended several rural schools, including the Svold school. He went to Cavalier High School one year, then continued at Park River Agricultural School, after which he was employed by local farmers. On December 22, 1953, he was united in marriage to Jessie Belanus. They lived near Hensel and Mountain until December 1956 when they purchased the Mobil Service Station in Walhalla. Later, he opened several businesses there, joined many of the civic organizations and was especially active in Knights of Columbus. Some of his favorite things to do were hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, gardening, golf, bowling, playing pinochle, spending time with his grandchildren and was an avid fan of football. Leonard is survived by his wife, Jessie, sons Martin (Laurie) Urlaub, West Fargo; Joel (Sandy) Urlaub, Walhalla; Grandchildren: Samantha (Thomas) Johnson, Walhalla; Marcus (Malissa) Urlaub, Christopher (Nikki) Urlaub, both in Bloomington, MN and Nicholas (Marissa) Urlaub in Grand Forks; Great Grandchildren: Jaxon Suedel & Mckenna Johnson; Camille & Jack Urlaub; and twin boys soon to arrive; Siblings: Leona Bielinski and Wayne (Kris) Urlaub in Washington State; Delores Kenny, Chicago; Mercedes Hayward, Florida; and Karen Cavallaro, Arizona; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ragnheidur Evelyne Holenski (nee Olafson) February 8, 1935 – April 15, 2023 Peacefully on April 15, 2023, Evelyne passed away at the Grace Hospital at the age of 88. Evelyne was born a tiny, premature baby, to Icelandic immigrant parents Haldor B. Olafson and Kristbjorg Helgason. She was raised in the tightly knit Icelandic community of Brown, often known as 1-6, which was nestled in the Pembina Hills south of Morden, Manitoba, touching on the US border. She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Roy. Evelyne was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Lorne (Buddy), and her sister, Doreen Webber, numerous brother and sisters-in-law, and one nephew. She will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Klowak as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. Born into humble circumstances during the Great Depression, she learned early the importance of hard work. This work ethic was to become her trademark as it encompassed all she did throughout her lifetime. Icelandic-proud and Viking-strong, she realized the importance of education. She worked diligently at odd jobs to help pay for High School and Normal School, graduating with a teaching certificate at age 17. Education was lifelong pursuit for her. While teaching full-time, she completed her BA and MA, taking summer and night courses. She embarked on a rewarding 39-year teaching career: 3 years in the country schools of Debonair and Deer Creek, and 36 years with Winnipeg School Division #1 at Earl Grey and Harrow. She was a well-respected educator, coach, and mentor, inspiring generations of students with the energy and determination familiar to all who knew her. She served and played a leading role on numerous committees and boards. In 1956 Evelyne married Roy Holenski and together, for almost 67 years, they shared a love, friendship, work ethic and partnership seldom seen in one’s lifetime. Together they embarked on a 40-year span in coaching, managing, and building the sport of women’s softball. As visionaries they influenced its development from the grass roots to the elite level. Their lives embodied the true spirit of volunteerism, compassion, advocacy, and philanthropy. Evelyne has been the recipient of many honours. Among them she served as the team leader of Softball Canada’s National Team, attending many world events, including leading the Canadian delegation at the Pan Am Games, Women’s World’s, and the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She has been recognized as a coach and builder in the Manitoba Softball, Sport Manitoba, and Softball Canada Halls of Fame. The family would like to thank the 3 North staff at the Grace Hospital for their kindness and compassion to Evelyne and the family. It is greatly appreciated.
