Helen was predeceased by her husband, Orville in 1990, brother, Jake MacDonald and sister, Ruth Nichol. Helen was born in 1935 the third daughter of Don and Elva MacDonald and raised on the family farm north of Darlingford. She met and married Orville Johnston in 1953 and they started their marriage in Flin Flon. She had two daughters, Duff and Butch. They worked their way back to Darlingford where they bought a farm. Mum worked right alongside dad; they farmed grain, milked cows, raised pigs and chickens, etc. Later on, they gave up milking cows seven days a week. Mum’s hobbies were entertaining friends and neighbors. She always made time to boil up a pot of coffee and set out a plate of dainties except for on Mondays which was wash day and everyone knew to stay away. Mum was a great baker and gardener and loved her flowers. She cleaned her windows weekly and the house was spotless. She sewed all our clothes and because we were the same size, we were always dressed the same. She was a hard act to follow. Mum and dad took us on family vacations to Flin Flon. They enjoyed camping for many years and took trips to Hawaii, Australia, Cuba and Palm Springs. They spent winters in Arizona after retirement. Mum played piano for many singsongs and went to every dance the Darlingford hall had. She was a happy, bubbly short woman, hence the nicknames, Slim or Shorty. We will miss her dearly but know that she is with the love of her life, Orv. A graveside service at 2:00 p.m. on Friday November 25 at Darlingford Cemetery. IN TRIBUTE The farm was tired and said, “I have tried to keep up with you all these years. You have loved me, all my acres, through good times and bad. You have been up well before dawn and well past the settling of the sun to nurture the soil and seed through all the seasons. You have become a watchful expert of my every strength and faithful servant of my many needs. You have stood by me, steadfast, through hailstorms that devastated an entire harvest bounty, high winds that demolished the proud, family-built barn, flooding water basin washouts of planted acres, pastures and roads, and drought years that extinguished life from my burgeoning crops.” With great and gentle love, the farm added, “I cannot thank you enough for all of this, my brother, for 84 years of abiding love and devotion. You have blessed me with more gifts than I could imagine. Whatever can I do for you in return?” The farmer smiled and lovingly gazed across the acreage, taking in all the sloping hills, shiny sloughs and wetlands, natural grasses and pasture lands, cherished views and vistas, and replied, “It is I who owe you. You have been by my side since birth, without abandon. You have given me much joy, great bounty, lifelong lessons and generations of gifts from your rich soil. We have grown older together and truly seen each other through the best and worst of times. Your landscape is etched in my mind along with the cherished memories of my full life here with my family. A beautiful life. What else could I possibly want? You have given your all, and I am eternally grateful.” And with that, the brothers shared a gentle sigh, knowing smile and sweet embrace, both so very tired and in need of rest. “Then, let us rest together, just as we have lived throughout the seasons of these many years.” “Rest, my brother, forever by my side. You are safe and you are loved.” Dolores P. Indridson, 97, of Cavalier, ND passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND. After high school, Eldoris moved to Fargo, ND but continued to visit family and friends in the Nome area, where she met her future husband, Leland Rodlin. Her parents moved to Devils Lake, and on November 2, 1952, Eldoris and Leland were united in marriage at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. After their first son was born in 1954, Leland was working for a seismograph crew, and they began moving South. Eldoris often spoke of working at an orphanage in Colorado. Caring for children always remained a part of her life. In Colorado, Leland and Eldoris would have 3 more children. Moving back to ND, Eldoris worked many jobs while they raised their family. Lee and Eldoris ran a café and hotel in Binford, ND, then moved to Cooperstown and finally moved back to Devils Lake. She would work at the School for the Deaf, Mercy Hospital, The Great Northern Café, the Mayor Café, and the Eagles; where she was in the Ladies Auxiliary, serving as Auxiliary President in 1992. In the 70’s, Eldoris began caring for children again, taking in foster children, then adding daycare to the mix. Our home was always full of children, some coming in the wee hours to stay short term and others lived with us for much longer periods of time. Some came daily when their parents were at work. Some got a bit spoiled, but that was okay. There was always enough love to go around. On March 8th, 1988, Eldoris was widowed when Leland passed away. She endured it all and kept going, continuing her child care. She really was one tough lady. On July 10, 1992, Eldoris was united in marriage to Ed Dosch at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In 2008, at nearly 80 years old, Eldoris decided she would retire. By that time, she was a caregiver for LRC.
