Mark L. Fassett, 54 of Fort Totten, ND passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 in the loving care of his family.
A Wake will be at the Dakota Baptist Church, Fort Totten on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m.  The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday from City Plaza, Devils Lake.
The Funeral for Mark will be on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dakota Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Young officiating. Burial will be in the spring at St. Jerome’s Cemetery, rural Crow Hill. 

Funeral service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday March 11, 2023 at the Morden Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery.

Corey Dale Groening
1976 ~ 2023
 Corey Groening, age 46 years of Fraserwood, MB formerly of Morden, passed away accidentally near Gimli on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.
He is survived by his parents, Terry and Eva Groening, two sisters, Shauna (Kevin) and Tiffany (Hamza) and their families.

Glenn, aged 87 years of Sperling, Manitoba passed away February 4, 2023 at Carman Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his brother Jim, sisters Eileen and Pat and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother-in-laws Lowell Winters and Andy Lecuyer.
Glenn was very active in the Sperling Community all his life. He served on the Council of the RM of Morris for thirteen years and was on the Board of the Carman Memorial Hospital for seventeen years. He served as Secretary of the Sperling Co-op for many years, and was also a member of the Sperling Volunteer Fire Department.
Glenn also enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf and socializing with his friends, especially Steve and Tom.
Glenn was also an avid gardener and would have many varieties of tomatoes etc. In the Fall the whole garden would be red and green. The only thing he really regretted about moving to town was that the garden was not as fertile as the one at the farm.
Many thanks to neighbours Don and his wife Val for all their support and friendship.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him especially Jim, Eileen, Pat and all the nieces and nephews, he was loved.

Joyce Eileen Kavanaugh, 97 of Devils Lake ND passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Joyce Eileen Kavanaugh was born in Parshall, North Dakota and resided in Devils Lake, North Dakota.
Joyce was a lifelong educator and learner having earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Education at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota. She taught in North Dakota schools in Lawton, Lakota, and Devils Lake School for the Deaf. She also received an Associate Degree in Paralegal studies later in life at Lake Region State College, Devils Lake, North Dakota.
Surviving family members are Joyce’s children: Jesse E. Nicholson, Sidney, Montana; Stephen C. Nicholson, Lakota, North Dakota; Heather E. Pavey, Colorado Springs, Colorado; J’Amy K. Petersen and husband Robert C. Petersen, Clarkesville, Georgia and Bartley C. Nicholson, Crookston, Minnesota.  Joyce’s grandchildren: Dr. Christina Broadwell, M.D.; Jessie Nicholson, Ethan Nicholson, Bailey Nicholson, Jacob Pavey and Hilary May.
No funeral services will be held.

​Jerroll D. “Jerry” Olson, age 89 of Hoople, North Dakota, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton.
Jerry was born November 6, 1933 in rural Walsh County to Oliver and Ruby (Almen) Olson. He was the second of four children. Jerry grew up and attended school in Hoople where he played many sports for the Hoople Spuds.
He married Nadine Rodger in 1953. In 1955, Jerry graduated from Valley City State College where he lettered in three sports. After graduation, Jerry taught and coached at Pelican Rapids for five years.
He moved to Grand Forks where he became assistant coach for the UND Sioux football program. In 1968, he became the first North Dakota native to become head coach of the program and went on to coach many championship caliber teams. During that time he led the Sioux to four NCC Championships. Jerry was named District Coach of the year and North Dakota College Coach of the Year in 1972. He had the honor of being inducted into both the UND Hall of Fame and the Valley City State Hall of Fame. Jerry was one of the original founders of Potato Bowl USA and was twice named the Grand Marshal of the Potato Bowl parade.
After his football career, Jerry began farming at Hoople where he also served on the boards of Hoople Farmers Grain and Hoople Potato Growers Association.
Jerry had an eclectic interest in car and furniture restoration. Throughout the years, Jerry restored many classic cars. One of his favorites was his red 1959 Ford pickup that was a staple in his garage.. He also refurbished the original woodwork trim in the home he and Nadine shared along with many beautiful antique furniture pieces.
Above all, Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. He took a genuine interest in the lives of his family and friends.  His kindness and steadfast leadership will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nadine, of Hoople; his children, Nancy Conover of Fort Collins, CO; Steve (Maren) Olson of Hoople; Barb Nilles of Mendota Heights, MN; and Patti (Kevin) Huppert of Ellsworth, WI; eight grandchildren, Rachel (Ryan) Burhans, Sarah Conover, Britt (Kevin) Godlington, Bennett (Dragana) Olson, Kari Olson, Margo Nilles, Adam (Shawna) Hupperts, and Andy (Becky) Huppert; 13 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, brother, Joel (Peggy) Olson and sister-in-law, Joyce Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, LaVoy Olson; sister, Echo Bjertness; and two brothers-in-law, David Rodger and Ben Bjertness.
Memorial services will be Monday, March 13, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church of Hoople. Visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. Inurnment will be at the Hoople City Cemetery.  Memorials are preferred to the Hoople City Cemetery or the UND Jerry Olson Football Scholarship Endowment at UND Foundation, 3501 University Avenue, Stop 8157, Grand Forks, ND 58202.  Jerry’s funeral will be live streamed on the First Lutheran Church of Hoople’s Facebook page.

Francis “Punch” Tony Roulette Sr., 62 of St. Michael ND passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at his home.
Funeral Services for Francis will be held at St. Michael’s Recreation Center on Saturday, March 4, 2023. A procession to St. Michael will leave at 8:30 a.m. from City Plaza, Devils Lake on Saturday with visitation to be held from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Paul Young, Pastor at Dakota Baptist Church, Fort Totten officiating. The burial will be at Ephraim Hill Cemetery, rural Fort Totten, ND in the spring.
Francis Tony Roulette was born on April 24, 1960 at Brandon, Manitoba, Canada the son of Amos Williams Tacan and Esther RunEarth. He was raised by his adopted Mom Jessie (Grandma Jessie). He grew up in Canada and attended school there. He always said “I had the best life growing up. But my life really started when I met Janice.”
Punch met Janice Hill in July of 1979 at a Sioux Valley Bingo. That weekend Janice was ready to come back to the United States. Punch went to his house, told his family that he was not going to let this girl leave alone, so he packed his clothes and came back to the US with Janice. After living in the US 1 ½ years, Francis was united in marriage to Janice in July of 1981. Shortly after marriage they welcomed their 1st child Jennie, then came Toni in May of 1984. After becoming a father, he moved his family to Fort Totten, making that his hometown. Punch began working for Sioux Manufacturing for well over 20 years. He took a break from there going just next door to Dakota Tribal Industries. He worked there until they closed their doors for good.
Punch always had something to do. He was never “bored.” His favorite things to do were always with family and friends. He went back home frequently to the “mother land” he would call it; meaning back to Sioux Valley for family visits.
He enjoyed listening to a variety of music; Pow-Wow music, Rock, RnB, some Pop music because he liked the way it bumps. He taught all his kids to drive so he could sit back on the passenger side and jam out to his music. He had something in common with each and every one of his kids. He found that to be very special. Whether it was the same taste in music or the love for the same thing. No matter what it was, he was super happy about it.
When his grandkids started being born, the love in his eyes for the grand babies was just unexplainable. You could tell by the look on his face when he held them. The smile he smiled when he was watching them. That giggle-that laugh, was just heart-warming. After watching all his kids grow up and seeing them start their own families, he was happy that the grandkids got to grow up with him. He always said “I raised all you kids, now I get to raise and watch the grands. And he did!
He called his grandson Possum to talk about cars and trucks and how they were going to start fixing them up and what they were going to do and where they were going to go. During the summer and winter of 2021-2022, Punch bought the grandkids a go-cart and snowmobile. When the parents would drive by the house on their way to work, they would see Punch outside playing with all his grand babies.
Family meant everything to Punch. His friends were all special to him too. He always went for drives and would pop in randomly sometimes. If Janice wanted to go someplace to shop or just for a day cruise, Punch was always the driver.
Punch is going to be missed by all who ever got to meet him and got to know him throughout his 40 plus years living here!

Punch leaves behind his wife Janice; adopted Mom Jesse Chaske; daughters Jennie Nicole, Toni Lynn, Deanna Gail, Brittany Faith; son Francis Tony JR; sons-in-law Josh, Clifford, Beau, Austin; daughter-in-law Ashley; grandchildren Anthony Littleghost, Taylor, Devyn, Peyton, Skylar, Aalayah, Malikai, Kyra, Dakota, Serena, Treycen, Ian, Addison, Auliana, Avery, Bella Rose, Timothy Sage and Alan; great grandson Angelo; two great granddaughters; sister Pauline Roulette; brothers Kirk, Matt and Vincent Surface; nieces Jennifer McKay, Donna, Korissa, Ashley, Kristen and Lacy Roulette; nephews Waylon Blacksmith, Jason McKay, Tim, Nathan and Sage Roulette and many other dear nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Wayne A. Jacobson, 74 of Devils Lake formerly of Leeds ND passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023 at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake surrounded by his loving family. 
Funeral Services for Wayne will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Lori Pankratz officiating. Burial and Military Honors will be held at the Devils Lake Cemetery. Fellowship will follow in the church dining hall.

Wayne Alan Jacobson, son of Russell and Norma (Anderson) Jacobson was born on January 24, 1949 in Rugby, North Dakota. He grew up in Leeds, ND, attended school there and graduated from Leeds High School with the class of 1967.  In high school, Wayne played trumpet in the band and also participated in Track. He continued his education at Lake Region Junior College, working various jobs to help pay his way through college.
Wayne entered the United States Army on April 6, 1970 and proudly served his country stateside and in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on December 20, 1971 with the rank of Specialist 4.
After his discharge, Wayne returned to the Lake Region and in May of 1974 began working as an Engineering Technician with the North Dakota State Highway Department. He retired in April of 2006 after dedicated service of 32 years. While working in Rolette, ND with the Highway Department, Wayne met his precious Sheila Johnson and they were united in marriage on October 18, 1975 at the Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette. They lived in Leeds for a short time, then moved to Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family through the years. 
Wayne loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting with family and friends.  It was the perfect day, when Wayne could sit out on the deck, enjoying a good cup of coffee and good conversation with neighbors, family and friends.  As the evening would come, Wayne enjoyed a little star gazing and just the pure beauty of nature.  Indoor time was spent watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, NASCAR, playing pinochle and solitaire on his computer.  But the most treasured times were those spent with his family.
Wayne was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and also enjoyed membership in the Devils Lake Elks and Eagles Lodges.
Wayne’s loving family include his wife of 47 years, Sheila; son Michael Jacobson (Amy); daughter Cindy Jacobson (John) and granddaughter Abigail Nash all of Devils Lake; brothers Curtis (Peggy) Jacobson and Danny (Cathy) Jacobson all of Devils Lake; mother-in-law Delores Johnson, Rugby ND; in-laws Mark and Phyllis Johnson, Rugby and Gloria Belisle, Willow City ND; many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Norma, brother David Jacobson, father-in-law Albin Johnson and brother-in-law Terry Johnson.   

Brent Allen Putnam   June 10th, 1967-February 21st, 2023
On February 27th, 2023, Brent Allen Putnam, age 55, passed away in his home after a long illness. All services for Brent will be celebrated on Monday, February 27th, 2023, at Gilbertson’s Funeral Home, Devils Lake. Viewing of the body will be between 10am to 2pm Deacon Robert Greywater will officiate the service. A meal will follow at the White House Café at 3:15.
Brent was born in Dickinson ND on June 10th, 1967, to Robert and Patricia Putnam. He was raised in many different places in North Dakota and Montana.
As a child, Brent lived with his father, Robert for most of the years, spending summertime with his mother and sisters and his dad Harris Hegg. Brent was happy to exclaim that those summers with his sisters were the best time for him because he would be able to make bonds with his sisters and get into mischief as little boys do. At six years old he got into the tools and cut his own bunkbed in half.
Brent attended elementary and middle school in Dickinson, Mandan and Linton North Dakota and went to school for a time in Pollock, SD while he lived with his aunt Dorothy and uncle Bob Pollock in Pollock South Dakota. Brent loved to talk about his childhood days on the ranch with his father Robert. As a teen, he struggled with school and suffered bullying at school, so Brent spent two years living with his dad Ingemar Johansson and he graduated from Belfield High School in Belfield ND. Brent always said he learned how to be a man from Ingemar and the work ethic he had was from his dad Ingemar.
Brent’s main interests as a young man were rock music and playing drums. His favorite band was Rush. He played his drums for fun and for entertainment. Drumming was his passion and soothed his soul as a young man. He also loved hanging out with friends and having a cold drink. He would attend rock concerts and invite his family and friends along to make the experience even more exciting. He also loved nature and took care of Mother Earth where he could. Cleaning up litter and planting trees was a favorite past time in his younger days.
Brent was a kindhearted person; he would give to anyone who asked if he was able. He was generous to a fault, even as a child. Brent also loved the Lord and held a strong faith. He couldn’t wait to meet Jesus and expressed his passion for Him every time he had the chance. Brent wasn’t one to go to church, but  it was apparent that he loved God. Brent was also very family oriented and reveled in having his family nearby.
Brent married Darlene (Blackbird) Myhre in 1991. He and she created a family and lived in Fort Totten ND where he worked at Dakota Tribal Industries until they closed the doors and then at Sioux Manufacturing. Brent then went on to work at the Spirit Lake Casino as a gaming cashier. He was a hard worker and took great pride in his skills.
Brent married Tammie Robinson in 2010 at the Dakota Baptist Church. He and Tammie made their home in Fort Totten ND, where he helped her with her children and grandchildren, and they loved a dog named Princess. Upon Tammie’s death, Brent moved into Devils Lake ND where he resided until his death.
Brent is preceded in death by his parents, Patricia Anderson, and Robert Putnam. His dad Harris Hegg and his four siblings, Robert and Carmel Putnam, Mitchell Hegg and Debbie Reinhardt.
Brent is survived by his children, Eric Joramo and Jessica Blackbird, Abriel Chanez (Chopper) and Ellie Blackbird (Darlene) and Lynn McKay and Robbie McKay (Tammie). His sisters, Reaba (Kurtis) Mack, Brandy Popelka and Sharene Adams, Elin Johanson, BobbyJo (Myron) Daiker and his brothers Hayden Volk and Simon Johansson and his dad Ingemar Johansson. Many uncles, aunts and cousins as well who will miss him dearly.
The family would like to acknowledge Brent’s caretakers, Kathleen Nelson, his cousins, Kelly Jo Waanatan and Katelyn Christenson who comforted him and kept him company throughout his illness. Cousins Scotty Bull and Chris Cavanaugh Jr. for helping Brent anytime he called. His friends Meda Cavanaugh and Tom Longie, for entertaining Brent and Raymond Skadsem, his friendly neighbor who helped Brent and his sisters by being near and attentive to Brent. The Mormon missionaries who visited weekly.
The family would also like to make a special mention to Edmore Ambulance, Lake Region Ambulance, Spirit Lake Ambulance and Sprit Lake Health Center for always giving Brent top notch care and respecting him in every way.

Delores “Dody” Tallackson, age 89 of Grafton, ND passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church of Rural Hoople.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Inurnment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery of Rural Hoople in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Pregnancy Help Center in Park River or the Gideons International.
