Roger A. Mattson, age 83 of rural Drayton, ND passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at the Unity Hospital of Grafton, ND.


Roger A. Mattson was born June 27, 1938 near Drayton, ND the son of the late Gilbert and Agnes (Nelson) Mattson. He attended rural school near Drayton and graduated from the Drayton High School. Roger was united in marriage to Joann Votava on October 4, 1958 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oakwood. Roger served in the United States Army from 1962-1963. Following his discharge he returned home and started working with Cecil Berger moving houses. He later took over the business and Roger and his son Todd had Mattson House Moving. Roger loved to move houses and did that work for over 60 years. In the winter months he worked for Borden’s and Mattson Manufacturing. Joann passed away on May 31, 2020.


Roger was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Oakwood, St. John’s Catholic Church of Grafton and the Grafton Knights of Columbus.


He is survived by his children: Todd Mattson, Drayton, ND; Tracy (Dan) Young, Park River, ND; grandchildren: Jonathan (Vanessa) Mattson, Grand Forks, ND and Michael Young, Fargo, ND; two great grandchildren: Aubree and Odin Mattson. Roger was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sons: Toby and Troy, daughter-in-law, Kelly Mattson, brothers: Garfield, Elton, Benjamin, Arlyn, Clayton, Darrell, Larry and Curtis, sisters: Mildred Marier, Virginia Livingood, Betty Ann Cooper and Judy Morgan.


Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Oakwood, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.

Private funeral service will be held. Viewing will be from 3:30PM-9PM on Wednesday November 3, 2021 at Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler. Interment to follow at Westridge Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark's memory to the Winkler Basketball Club or please bring a new or used basketball to the viewing as a donation to the courts.

Russell L. Smith, 67, of Walhalla, ND passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 at his home.
He is survived by his children: Sara (Rob) Price, Walhalla, ND and Zachery (Jessica) Smith in Utah; his grandchildren: Makenna, Bella, and Grace Follin, Jett Price, and Phoebe Smith.

Marilyn J. Hovde, age 93 of Grafton, ND passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton. 
Marilyn Elshaug was born June 23, 1928 in Grafton, North Dakota, the daughter of the late John and Johanna (Anderson) Elshaug.  Marilyn attended school in Grafton.  She was united in marriage to Hans Clayton Hovde on December 16, 1947 in Grafton.   They made their home in Grafton where they raised their six children.  Hans passed away on April 7, 1984.  While raising her family, Marilyn worked at Williamson Creamery, Grafton American Legion, and later at JC Penney where she was employed for several years.  Marilyn enjoyed cooking for her family and making lefse.  She was also noted for her quick wit and one-liners. 
She is survived by her children: Michael (Bea) Hovde, Forest River, ND; Gail (Willy) Stoltman, Dazey, ND; Cheryl (Bernie) Davidson, Ridgefield, WA; Marlene Hagarty, Chandler, AZ; Guy Hovde, Grafton, ND; 14 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.  Several nieces and nephews, also survive.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Steven Eugene Hovde, and great-grandson, Zachary Wayne Osowski, sisters: Emily (Clarence) Viger, Mabel (Martin) Kennelly, Helen (Millard) Torkelson, Ruth (Roland) Riopelle, Ruby (Ernest) Skjerven, June (Harvey) Skjerven and brothers: Roy (Irene), Edward, Leonard (Martha), and Willard.
Private family service will take place at a later date.

Dale G. Kruckenberg, 87 of Devils Lake passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Eventide Heartland Care Center surrounded by the love of family.
Dale G. Kruckenberg was born January 10, 1934 to Ludwig “Louie” and Hattie (Grosz) Kruckenberg in Hazen, ND.  He attended eight years of country school northeast of Hazen.  He then attended Hazen High School graduating with the Class of 1952.  Dale was active in FFA in high school and as a senior he was on the state livestock and grain judging team that went to Kansas City to the National Judging Competition.
Dale attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND from 1952 – 1953, he then volunteered for the draft being called to active duty in October 1953.  He took eight weeks of basic infantry training at Ft. Riley, KS, followed by eight weeks of lineman training at the same base, all with the 10th Mountain Division.  Then it was on to Ft. Lewis, WA to an Infantry Holding Company for two months and then to Ft. Lewis, WA to Camp Gilmore, NJ and eventually to Hanau, Germany outside of Frankfurt.  There serving with the 4th Infantry Division.  Dale spent most of his time in Germany attached to UN Force’s on the Czechoslovakia and Berlin borders.  This assignment was due to Dale’s being able to speak German.  Dale was honorably discharged on October 21, 1955 at Ft. Sheridan, IL.
Dale married Joanne Landseidel in July 1963 in Minot, ND.  Joanne had two sons from a previous marriage, Jeffery (Tili), Phoenix, AZ; Mark (Cathy), Anthem, AZ.  Dale and Joanne made their home in Velva, Hazen and then Devils Lake in 1966.  They had one son, David, born in 1964.  This marriage ended in divorce in 1975.
In 1978, Dale married Joyce Bednarz. They continued to live,  work and raise their family in Devils Lake. In their early retirement, they spent winters in Arizona and Texas; traveled through Mexico including the Copper Canyon; cruises to Islands and the east and west Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska and the Panama Canal. Joyce and Dale were able to visit most states by car or by bus. A highlight trip was to Norway, land of Joyce’s, cousins and many ancestors.
At one time, Dale belonged to the Eagles Club, the Elks Club, the American Legion, 40/8, Cooties and is a lifetime member of the VFW Post 756 and was a District 6 Commander from 1975 – 76.  Dale was also involved in youth activities helping build outdoor hockey rinks and baseball diamond dug outs.  He served as VFW State Youth Activities Director under two State VFW Commanders and during that time started a VFW State Peewee Hockey Tournament and a statewide VFW and National Guard youth camp that was held at Camp Grafton.  This was when Major General Murrey was commander of the ND National Guard.  Dale was a member of Post 756 Honor Guard since 1976. 
Dale was a High Voltage Lineman for Western Area Power Association (WAPA) for over 23 years.  Prior to joining WAPA, Dale worked in powerline construction for 14 years in various states and then for 4 years with UPA. Dale was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Devils Lake since 1976.  He volunteered to coordinate the volunteers at Our Saviors for a remodeling project from July through November of 1995.
Dale is survived by his son David (Kimberly) Kruckenberg, Matthews, NC; stepchildren Kelly Bednarz, Devils Lake, Robert Bednarz, Billings MT,  Tami (Todd) Romine, and Brenda (Sonya) Bednarz all of Devils Lake and Jason (Ann) Bednarz, Fargo, ND; grandchildren Josh Bednarz; Tyson (Kim) Bednarz and Taylor Bednarz; Jared and Jordan Garcia (Catherine); Randi (Levi) Heisler, Marsten (Marcella) Bednarz; great grandchildren Macen, Aspen and Max Heisler and Gretchen Bednarz; sister-in-law Lorraine Ohm; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joyce; grandsons Dane Garcia and Shaun Bellile; sisters Elsie Enloe and Murphy Grant, brothers Arley Kruckenberg and Ray Kruckenberg, and brother-in-law Quentin Jelsing.
Urn Bearers will be great grandsons Macen, Aspen and Max Heisler.  Reading Scripture will be Randi Heisler.

Leo P. Kalis, 81, of Walhalla, ND passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. of COVID 19. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services.
Leo was born on May 7th, 1940 to Charles and Eleanora (Schwartz) Kalis on the family farm west of Walhalla. He was the oldest of five sons. He attended school in Walhalla and went on to work a variety of jobs, giving him the opportunity to travel and enjoy many different states throughout the U.S. One of his favorite jobs was working road construction as an operator of scrapers and push-cats. Leo married Kathy Bill of Hamilton, ND on July 19, 1974 in Hallock, MN. To this union, three daughters were born. Leo was known for his love of hunting and looked forward to deer season every fall. You could always see the excitement in his eyes when he was dressed in all orange with a rifle in one hand and his lunch cooler and thermos of coffee in the other, heading out the door on a mission to bring home a prized point buck. Leo loved spending his time outside in the warmer months. He took pride in his yard by keeping the grass neatly mowed and picking up fallen branches from the trees. He kept his bird feeders filled and enjoyed the simple joys of nature. He lit up with excitement when he would tell others about his adventurous stories of his younger days. Many of you can probably still picture the smile on his face and the sound of his laugh while he would share these memories. He loved his family very much and was especially fond of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will also be remembered for his love for wearing a fancy pair of cowboy boots and his knowledge of daily weather reports. Before retiring, his last job was helping Stremick Farms by driving potato truck. He was usually first on the job and was known for his strong work ethic. Leo is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, Wanda Letexier, Bonnie Soli & Twyla Preble. Leo is also survived by his son, Randy Kalis from a previous marriage, grandchildren Jordyn (Travis) Johson, Meghan, Drew & Autumn Forschen, Hunter, Tucker & Tanner Soli, Kealy, Brooke, Parker, Ireland & Hensley Preble & 3 great grandchildren Taryn and Tatum Johnson, and Carsen Johnson, brothers, Frank (Sharon) Kalis, Albert Kalis, & George Kalis, brother-in-law, Wayne Bill, sister-in-law, Geri (Bob) Thomas, brother-in-law, Merlyn Dalsted. Preceding him in death were his parents, his son Ricky (Randy's older brother) who perished in 1978 at age 10 in a mobile home fire. We know there hasn't been a day since the event of Ricky's passing without heaviness weighing down Leo's heart. We are at peace knowing that they are reunited again. Also preceding him in death was his brother, John, sisters-in-law, Kaye Dalsted, Louise Williams, LouAnne Bill, and Rose Kalis, brothers-in-law, Randy Bill and Bob Williams. Leo, may you rest in peace. You will never be forgotten by anyone who knew you.

Mary Bargen (nee Janzen) passed away quietly in her sleep on October 27th, 2021 at the Boyne Lodge in Carman.  During her last days, the family had visited often as she had made it clear she wanted to be with Jesus by her birthday on October 28th.  She stopped eating and drinking and told us over and over how much she loved us. 
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Abram and Helene Janzen, husband Frank F. Bargen, her son Don Bargen and her grandson Chad Falk.  Also predeceasing her were siblings John (Daphne) Janzen, Anne (Rudy Boschman), Irma (Ernie Esau) and brother Henry Janzen as well as well as brother-in-law Jake Enns and sister-in-law Lydia Janzen.  She is survived by her sister Maggie Enns and brothers Fred Janzen (Dorothy), Jack Janzen (Hilda) and Abe Janzen (Aggie), and sister-in-law Clara Janzen (Henry). 
Mary Leaves behind her daughters Linda (Dave Enns), Ruth (Ron Stege), Elaine (Gerry Falk), her son John Bargen (Donna-Rae) and daughter-in-law Karen Bargen, along with 24 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Mary was born on October 28th, 1923 in Steinbach, Russia to Abram and Helena Janzen.  In 1926, she moved to Canada with her parents and older brother John, and settled in Elm Creek.
Mom gave her life to Jesus, her Saviour, early in her life and was baptised upon confession of her faith in July, 1944.  As the eldest girl of the family, she was Oma’s number one helper to raise her siblings.  Mary attended Winkler Bible School for a year and in 1945 went to work in Winnipeg as a housekeeper/maid.
When Frank Bargen saw Mary in a Dakota School concert, he fell in love and decided that was the girl he would marry.  She was only 13 and he had to wait 10 more years to fulfil his dream.  They were married on September 20th, 1947.
Mom will always be remembered for her big heart and welcoming spirit.  Dad would invite almost everyone for coffee or the next meal.  As kids, we learned the meaning of F.H.B. (family hold back) if mom hadn’t made quite enough.  We remember always hosting friends and relatives.
Mom had a heart of gold and will be remembered for how loving and kind she was.  She taught Sunday School and DVBS, sang in the choir and could be found helping in the kitchen at many events.  She was a life member of the Tracy Homemakers Club.  She knew how to cook or clean anything; she planted a huge garden and put it up for winter; while at the same time gathering, cleaning and grading the eggs for shipping.  Mom supported Dad in all his farming endeavours, serving on community boards and organizing local functions.
Mom loved fishing and every summer the family would go camping for a whole week.  We enjoyed family times and it wasn’t until later years that we realized the extra work mom did to get the food and clothes ready for these holidays.
Mom’s endless wisdom provided us with guidance throughout her life.  We have been truly blessed by her long life with us.
We wish to express our sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at Boyne Lodge for their wonderful care of Mom and consideration to the family during these last days.
We also sincerely appreciate the expertise and care taken by Mark Reimer of Doyle’s Funeral Home in the planning of the funeral, and to Pastor Bob Pauls for blessing us through the service and laying Mom to rest beside Dad.
