Deloris M. Porter, age 73 of Park River, North Dakota passed away Saturday, December 31, 2022 at the First Care Health Center of Park River.
Deloris M. Odden was born May 25, 1949 in Grafton, North Dakota, the daughter of the late Morris Odden and Doreen (Dauphinais) Mager.  She attended and graduated from Edinburg High School.  She managed Homme Dam and the Park River American Legion.  She worked for the Life Skills and Transition Center for 30 years until her health forced her to retire.  Deloris was united in marriage to Glen Porter on May 6, 1992 in Grafton, North Dakota.  The couple made their home in Park River.
She was a member of the Park River Federated Church.  She loved spending time with her family and friends, Bible study, playing cards and Bingo, travelling, camping, fishing, reading and loved animals.
Deloris is survived by her husband, Glen Porter, Park River, ND; children:  Shane (Jody) Gravelin, Park River, ND; Carla (Jeff) Wilmer, Drayton, ND; grandchildren:  Dylan and Dustyn Gravelin and Mason and Julian Wilmer; brother:  Paul (Laurie) Odden, Michigan, ND.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.  She was preceded in death by her parents.
Graveside services will be held in the spring.

Alan Roland Parkinson passed away on December 31, 2022, at Carman Hospital following a short illness. He was predeceased by his parents, Roland, and Alice Parkinson in 1997 and 2008, respectively.
He is survived by Greauin, cousins Bob Laing, Doreen (Laing) Bray, Joan (Wynne) Lidster, Marilyn (Wynne) Vinet, Anne McFarlane, Judy Curtis and special friends Dianne and Marge.
Alan was born July 17, 1941, and grew up in Winnipeg attending school and graduating from St. James Collegiate. While a young boy he was a member of the Cubs and Boys Scouts of Winnipeg. Following high school, he attended the University of Manitoba taking Agriculture in 1960. During this time, he spent summers and weekends farming.
He then moved to Elm Creek to live with relatives-Jack and Lois Wynne. At this time, he started farming with Grandad Laing, Jack Wynne and Charlie Laing.
During the summer he farmed and, in the winter, had numerous jobs – bartender at the Grandview Hotel in Elm Creek, worked in a bush camp in Sioux Lookout and spent two winters at Universal Machine in Winnipeg.
He was a member of the Elm Creek Kinsmen, Elm Creek Curling Club, and the Elm Creek Legion. Curling, golfing, hunting, travelling, and fishing were some of his favourite things to do.
In 1970 he built a house three miles north of Elm Creek when he married Greauin Hempel and they started farming on his own. When he started to lose his eyesight, he rented his land and did so until he sold and moved into Elm Creek in 2004.
Parky (as he was known to everyone) had a great memory. Family members would always go to him for family history. Visits were very important to him and although he was limited to things he could do, he loved hearing about activities of family and friends.

Merle N. Ault, 86, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Friday, December 30, 2022, at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier. 
On February 28, 1936, Merle Nicholas Ault was born to Nick and Violet (Sellheim) Ault in their home 4 miles south of Cavalier.
Merle attended and graduated from Cavalier High School. His first job was Cavalier’s lone newspaper deliverer because he knew where everyone lived. He attended Dakota Business College in Fargo. Merle was proud to work with his father at the Hartz Superette for many years.
Merle met his wife, Barb, while on a trip to California. They married on August 20, 1966 and enjoyed over 50 years together.
As a business owner, Merle was active cutting meat, ordering and stocking, as well as accounting. When he got to do a home delivery, he counted that as a bonus because he got to visit with a friend.
Merle started the Polaris Sales and Service for some winter fun. He and his friend Jack Williamson worked together, providing a place for young and old to come in and visit while working on their machines. A few of Merle’s sno-cats and cars continue to be in Polaris parades to this day.
Ault’s Fireworks was another fun business adventure. Merle sold fireworks in Cavalier for 64 years.
It is true, Merle was always working. He found great joy in being busy and lending a helping hand.
Merle served Cavalier as a City Councilman for 25 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #22 for over 50 years.
Merle was a lifelong member of the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a Trustee and a faithful servant of the Lord.
Merle’s grandchildren were the light of his life. He smiled over every picture, call, and visit. He was entertained by their stories and laughter. He loved them beyond measure.
Merle is survived by his daughter Noël, and son-in-law Daryl Watson of Cavalier. His grandchildren, their wives, and children are Nick and Becky Watson-Rylee and Reegan; Joseph Watson-Adrianna, Amaya, and Meelah, and one great great granddaughter Amira; Jordan and Natasha Watson-Ellie and Wilder. He is also survived by, brother Everett and Dolly Ault; brother-in-law Richard and Sharon Nolan; sister-in-law Mary Nolan Winkler, and many nieces and nephews.
Merle was preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Violet Ault; his wife Barbara Ault; great-grandson Conner Alexander Watson; brother Robert Ault; sisters, Maurine Striegel and Anna Mae Ault; brother-in-law Dennis Nolan.
Our family would like to thank all the staff of Wedgewood Manor, where Merle lived so comfortably. The love and kindness shown is appreciated more than you will ever know.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the church.

Gloria Denault, 74, of Gilby, ND, and formerly of Langdon, ND, passed away December 30, 2022, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
Gloria Eileen Schill was born December 2, 1948, in Langdon, ND, to Alexander and Mary Jane (Dix) Schill. She grew up and went to school in the Langdon area. Gloria married Joseph Denault on February 7, 1970, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel, ND. They farmed for a short time then moved to Montana and Oregon. In 1975, they returned to North Dakota and made Langdon their home. Gloria worked for many years in the housekeeping department at both Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon and at Altru Hospital after she and Joe moved to Grand Forks in 2006. Gloria retired in 2015 and had resided in Gilby, ND, since 2016. She loved being with family and enjoyed playing pinochle, Yahtzee, and bowling. She also liked to bake.
Surviving Gloria are her children: Gary of Langdon and Pauline Hansel of Gilby, ND; grandchildren: Melissa (Donovan) DeCoteau, Gary Jr., Samantha (Brady) Seemann, Travis (Sammantha) Hansel, Ashley Denault, Lucas Hansel, Sean Hoffarth (Tonya), and Danielle Hansel (Alex); 20 great-grandchildren; and brothers: Harold Schill, Valentine (Darleen) Schill, Fr. Damien Schill, and David (Darlene) Schill. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe; siblings: Jeannie Welch, Benedict Schill and Blaine Schill; and son-in-law Danny Hansel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023, at St. Alphonsus Church in Langdon, ND, with visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 1:30 p.m. before the funeral mass.

Jason Wade Joshua, 38, of Devils Lake, passed away on December 29th, 2022, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota, surrounded by his family and friends.
A celebration of Jason’s life will take place at Gilbertson’s Funeral Home on Wednesday January 4th at 11 a.m. Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. until time of service. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Ramsey County Event Center next to Peterson Arena for lunch following the service.
Jason Wade Joshua, son of Gale Vilandre and Michael Joshua, was born September 6th, 1984, at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake. Jason attended Devils Lake Public Schools and graduated in 2003. Jason briefly attended Lake Region State College. Jason was a carpenter by trade. Early in his career he worked with Jeff and Jesse Kenner learning many skills. Jason also did road construction and concrete work. Jason finally settled in with Sylling Construction for many years. Jason later worked for Don Jorgenson performing various carpentry jobs.
Jason started playing drums in the middle school band. His talent was undeniable, and everywhere he went he was tapping something to make a beat. He carried this talent the rest of his life. Jason’s favorite music was Metal. He was a hunting and fishing enthusiast. He loved nature and spending time with all his best friends catching fish and having laughs. Another one of his hobbies was gaming. He and his friends could play for hours. Jason was such a lovable person. He had a heart of gold. He was also known to crack a joke here and there. His laugh was contagious and he could always make people smile.
Jason is preceded in death by his mother Gale Vilandre, father Michael Joshua, maternal grandparents Donna and Richard Vilandre, paternal grandparents Florence and Lawrence Joshua Sr., uncles Derwin Vilandre, Gordy Vilandre, Lawrence Joshua Jr., aunt Shirley Olivas, cousin Nicole Olivas, and friends Brent Borgen and Jamie Olson.
Jason is survived by his loving fiancé Anne Rasmusson and her sons David and Blake, brothers Cory Youngbear, Levi Vilandre (Theresa), Chad Joshua (Jessica), sister Amy Hood (Jamie), nephews Parker, Jaxen, James, Calvin, Oliver, Kooper and Bambrick, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Levi Vilandre, Chad Joshua, Jesse Kenner, David Campbell, Kelly Leben, Darren Leben, Tyler Morin, and Dustin Laverdure.

Joyce Affeldt, 87 of Sheyenne ND passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo ND.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the Tokio Wellness Center on Friday, January 6, 2023 beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Funeral Services for Joyce will be on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 12:00 noon with Pastor Jay Deckert officiating. The procession to Tokio on Friday will leave at 9:30 a.m. from the City Plaza, Devils Lake. Burial will be in the spring at the Bdecan Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Tokio ND.
Joyce Marie, daughter of Patrick McKay and Florence Ironheart was born on November 9, 1935 at Fort Totten ND. She grew up on the Spirit Lake Nation, rural Sheyenne ND and attended the Fort Totten Boarding School.
Joyce was united in marriage to James Edward LaRoque in 1954 at Moorhead MN. They lived for a short time in the Warwick area, but eventually lived in several states in the Midwest, including Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming. James died in an accident in Wyoming on July 18, 1971.
Joyce brought her family back to North Dakota and settled in Oberon ND.  She worked for several years at the newly established Brunswick Manufacturing Corporation. She then shared her caring and loving heart with others as an employee at the Waconi Group Home and later as a Director at St. Jude’s Home for the Elderly both at Fort Totten.
Joyce married Jerry D. Affeldt Sr. and they lived for a time in Oberon, then moved to Pick City, ND until Jerry passed away in September of 1999. 
In September of 2001, Joyce moved to Sheyenne to be closer to family and called it home until her death. 
Joyce was musically talented just like her brothers and sisters. She played guitar and sang in various bands along with many singing engagements with her family. Joyce loved driving around the countryside and stopping at all the rummage sales, going to Thrift Stores and meeting old friends and making new ones at the Casino. She was an excellent cook and baker and shared all her goodies with family and friends. She treasured her grandchildren and great grandchildren and it brought her so much joy whenever they came to visit.
Joyce had a heart of gold. She would do whatever she could to help somebody out. She gave of her time and talents with a joyful heart to anyone in need.
Joyce’s loving family include her 4 sons and grandchildren Clint (Trudy) LaRoque and children Allura and Colten LaRoque, Patrick (Laurie) LaRoque and children Jeremy and Thomas Longie, Mitchell (Chelsea) LaRoque, Leon LaRoque and children Adam, Cody and Leon Jr. LaRoque, Jerry Affeldt Jr.; daughter Olena Walleen and her many dear children; many beloved great grandchildren; siblings Darrel “Duke” (Grace) Thumb Sr., Idell Thumb, Edward (Nan) Thumb, Elvis (Phaedra) Thumb Sr.; many nieces, nephews and their families.
She was welcomed home to Heaven by her Lord, parents Patrick and Florence, husbands James and Jerry, grandchild Ashton, siblings Inez Green, Wilbur McKay, Lavern McKay, Loretta Stensland, Roger Thumb, Gary Thumb Sr., Merle Thumb Sr. and Yvonne Thumb.
Casket Bearers for Joyce will be Colten LaRoque, Adam LaRoque, Cody LaRoque, Leon LaRoque Jr., Gabriel Jackson and Loren Nadeau; Honorary Pallbearers will be Mitchell LaRoque and Isaiah Nadeau.

1954 ~ 2022
 
On Tuesday December 27, 2022 in the RM of Morris, MB, Heinrich Renz, 68 passed away.
 Heinrich Renz was born as the 5th child on August 1, 1954 in the Kazakh city Berchogur in the Aktyubinsk region. His parents, Emmanuel and Susanna Renz, were believers in God and they passed on their faith to their seven children. The family lived in Burchogur until 1956. After the abolition of the commandant's office, the family moved to Aktyubinsk. Here Heinrich attended school and graduated in 1972. Heinrich was always curious and had very versatile interests. He loved traveling and always broadened his horizons. On November 8, 1972, he was called to military service for two years. At the beginning of December 1974 his military service ended, and he returned to Aktyubinsk. Here it did not hold him for long and he wanted to get to know new countries of the Soviet Union. Therefore, in 1975 he moved to the Caucasus with his two oldest sisters. They lived in the town Gulkevichi in the Krasnodar Territory until 1976, when he moved to Wenspils in Latvia. Here he met new cultures and people. These friendships have accompanied him throughout his life. In February 1977 he returned to Aktyubinsk. With his bright mind and golden hands, he always did a good job. As a result, it was not difficult for him to get a job as an assembler. He was employed here until January 1978 and was always highly appreciated by colleagues and superiors. During this time the whole Renz family decided to move to Germany. The easiest way to do this was to resettle via Kyrgyzstan. Therefore, the whole family moved to Kyrgyzstan. No one was surprised that Heinrich found a good job here as well, where he was employed until the resettlement in 1989. In the meantime, he met Irma Reimer at her birthday party in August 1981. Both knew that they had found the love of their lives. Shortly thereafter, on October 23, 1981, they sealed it with their wedding and started a family. Until their departure from Kyrgyzstan in March 1989, they had three children, Marianna, Lilli and Heinrich. In Germany, the family first arrived in Friedland and was then taken to Lichtenberg in the community of Morsbach. Here the family was able to settle down and continue to grow. With the two children, Angela and Richard, the family happiness was complete. Heinrich also found good work in Germany, where his good performance enabled him to advance to foreman in the field of custom container construction. His knowledge and opinion were always in demand and of great value to the whole company. In 2010, Heinrich and Irma also decided to move to Canada with their two youngest children. In spring 2011, he bought a house where he settled with his family. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop. Here he repaired machines and vehicles. Together with Irma they got some animals and ran the farm together. Even though Heinrich missed his family in Germany, he was satisfied with his life in Canada. He cherished his time with children and grandchildren and his family also appreciated the precious time with husband, father and grandpa. He is dearly missed by all.
He is survived by his loving wife, Irma Renz, his five children: Marianna (Juri Eckert), Lilli (Viktor Janzen), Heinrich, Angela (David Schellenberg), Richard and his nine grandchildren: Emily, Melina, Jayden, Jason, Anthony, Damian, Benjamin, Josephine, Alia.

Eileen Morris, 80, of Linton, ND, died December 27, 2022, in the Linton Hospital in Linton.
   Eileen was born on April 1, 1942, in Langdon, ND, the daughter of Gustav and Ruby (Uhrich) Greening. She was raised and educated in Wales, ND. Eileen married Dennis Morris on October 7, 1961. To this union the couple had one daughter, Jackie.
   Eileen sold crop insurance for the surrounding area of Clyde, ND. She was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Langdon, a leader for the Cavalier County 4-H, Clyde Hobby Club, and Christian Woman’s until the couple retired in 2005. They made their home in Linton. Eileen delivered meals on wheels in Linton, enjoyed meeting with the Red Hatters, the Linton Senior Citizens and was a part of the Emmons County Historical Society. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, and landscaping.
   Eileen is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Dennis; daughter Jackie (Ben) Wald; grandson Tobie (Jaimie) Wald; 2 great-granddaughters, Erica and Kelsie; brother-in-law Wally Walizer; and sisters-in-law Nita Bertsch and Sandra Melville. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Robert Greening; sister Marry Ann Walizer; and in-laws Jean and Walter Hammond and James and Algie Morris Melvile and Jim Melvile.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at the Linton United Methodist Church in Linton with Pastor Marlin Sapp. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the funeral service on January 3. Funeral services will also be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at United Lutheran Church in Langdon, ND, with Pastor Jodi Myrvik officiating. Burial will be at Lebanon Cemetery in Langdon, ND, in the spring of 2023.
